I need to replace a gate hinge or two:

I'm ok with the wood side of it but I'm a noob at driving screws through metal. Any opinions on whether the self-drilling types like these are good for the job, or if it's better to drill a hole first and use self-tapping sheet metal screws? And if I do have to drill holes for the screws, how do I determine the correct size? Plenty of info on the interwebnets about drilling metal, but I've had trouble finding any tips on putting screws in it.
