Browse Forums General Discussion Re: diy ducted vacuum 2Dec 24, 2010 7:11 pm I did one a few years back without any problems. Things to think about for timber floor installation: 1. Try to have nice long "straight" runs of plastic pipe for the vacuum return - any bends can be a problem with blockages - install inspection openings if you have corners. 45 degree bends should be OK if unavoidable - two of these will let you go around a corner with minimal restriction to the vacuum. The vacuum is quite powerful on these units and quite a few unintended objects get sucked up! 2. Think carefully about position of outlets - the hose is normally quite long so you usually only need 2 or 3 outlets in a typical house and perhaps one in garage or carport. 3. Position the main unit carefully because they are noisy - think of neighbours as well as proximity to your bedrooms etc. The unit needs power and remember it needs emptying periodically which can be a bit dusty/messy. 4. The system I used has a 2 core wire that runs along the vacuum pipe to turn the unit on when you use the hose - make sure you understand this wiring - get help if not, as it can be messy to sort out afterwards. That's all I can think of. Great units by the way we wouldn't be without ours! The unit had a plastic junction that had to be inserted on one side with a rubber grommet around it. It took a big guy about 2 hours to get it in - insanely difficult. Other than that it was all okay. The plastic clips that are supposed to hold the sock on the hose are throw away items - shoe string works better. Re: diy ducted vacuum 7Dec 27, 2010 8:12 am When DIY your ducted vac or intercom, please make sure NOT to install them close to where your power points or light switches are planned. Regulations require a specific distance that differing power 12/24v vs 240vAC be kept apart. Discovered this when I installed a prev ducted vac & my light switch was relocated further from doorway. I believe it is a min of 50cm. This also applies to data cables that you require installed in the future. Got a life, just can't find it! Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4782 Re my second point – yes exactly. And often it may take additional time if the manufacturer recommends no more than X meters… 3 5642 |
