Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 01, 2010 3:08 pm Hi all, I have a 2 storey house in Adelaide, which has a balcony coming off the upstairs floor. The 2 main beams/bearers come out of the brickwork of the house and join to 1 post. The post and the 2 main beams are full of wood rot where they meet. My question is, How are the 2 main beams removed, as they go through the brickwork and I assume are attached to the house frame? Cheers Re: Timber beams coming out of brickwork 2Dec 02, 2010 1:15 am Hi Triton, I'd say you will have to remove some bricks to get access to the fixings. If you can get hold of an Arbortech Allsaw you can very accurately remove bricks along the mortar line which makes reinstalling them easier. The other option is to drill out along the mortar joints. This will just take longer and not give such a great result. Once you have access to the fixings you can decide on the best way to remove or deal with them. Then after you have replaced the offending timbers you will then need to re-brick the wall up. Not easy but very doable. One way Ive seen the wood rot in the top of the Oregon beams fixed, was to remove the decking and remove about 50mm from the top of the beam and replace it. Naturally this wont be any good if your balcony beams have a large span. Arfur Re: Timber beams coming out of brickwork 4Jan 12, 2011 12:06 pm I tackled this project over my chrissy holidays. I was able to cut the beams off a couple of inches away from the wall with a sabre saw. One of the beams slid straight out of the wall For the second beam I drilled, with a 1" spade bit, and chiseled out the remaining timber until it split where it was nailed to the house frame. I was then able to remove the split pieces of timber. The new beams were slid into position in the wall and secured in place. Re: Timber beams coming out of brickwork 5Jan 16, 2011 11:20 am sounds like you already had all the tools in your toolbox. they can be costly sometimes if you buy them new from bunnings. Thanks for the informative response! I'll feed that back to the site supervisor. 2 4110 THanks , l got a licensed building inspector to look at the rust, he said its just surface rust and it would take many years to become a problem because the beams are so… 22 28042 |
