Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 29, 2010 7:35 pm Hi Everyone, I dont know whether anyone can help me but I have been trawling lighting websites and this forum looking for some information about putting downlights into cathedral and studio ceilings. Because of the angle required mount the housing and then the fact that the globe housing will be angled to provide light are there any lights that are better at this than others? We are also concerned about the fire factor of halogens, but cannot afford LED at the moment. My main question is whether there are any newbie errors that we should make sure we dont make? Many thanks, ML Re: Downlights in a cathedral/studio ceiling 2Nov 30, 2010 4:18 pm Hi there down lights look great in cathedral ceilings but you do have to be really careful that you keep anything that burns well away from them in the roof. My suggestion would be to go to a "few" lighting shops and ask if they can recommend an electrician to come look at your situation far safer than picking one out of the phone book or ask your real estate agent you bought from who they use for property maintanance. Get them to come and give you some ideas. You can ask for references but we have found they would not give you names of people who were not happy with them. We always ask the "locals" when we move to a new area who they recommend and have found some great trades people that way. Hope this helps Re: Downlights in a cathedral/studio ceiling 4Dec 15, 2010 12:55 am Hi hope you found the info you needed. just thought id add there are now compact fluros that look almost identical to halogens, and while they are not as bright still can provide good light levels and low energy consumption around 13 to 18w, the only problem is they take a few minutes to ramp upto full brightness when you first turn them on. halogens now have to be installed with heat cans in the ceiling to prevent anything sitting on the back of the globe and igniting, and also have to be spaced away from beams, so provided your sparky installs them according to the regs u shouldnt have an increased fire hazard, the best for halogen is the 35w globes, they are really bright, and abit better on energy consumption than the old 50w globes. goodluck Re: Downlights in a cathedral/studio ceiling 5Dec 28, 2010 9:30 am Thanks Steve. I think that is the thing - speaking to lots of lighting people and tradies. The problem is that every person we speak with has a different product that they are "on". Thanks for the advice on the globes though - will keep in mind. Cheers! Our 6m high Cathedral ceiling has 0 insulation, just plaster, wrap and tiles as far as I can tell. Wife likes the exposed beams, I hate the $600 per month heating bill,… 0 13495 I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings. There is no benefit in keeping it… 1 4123 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5947 |
