Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 21, 2010 1:13 pm Hi - A Builder has just done a deck for us ( 3mths ago) - The joist/ bearer space is 600mm - and the timber is bouncing when you walk on it and getting worse. ( close to a trampoline bounce) - I have since had another tradie tell me the space shold be 450mm - Can anyone let me know what is correct. It's alot of money to pay for something that I need to replace very soon and is dangerous. I live in Port Lincoln South Australia. Re: Decking - Standards 3Nov 22, 2010 6:14 am If the decking boards are 20mm thick, the max spacings for the joists is 450mm Is that how thick the decking boards are? If the decking boards are 26mm, you may be able to go out to 600mm, but I wouldn't. Better be safe than sorry Re: Decking - Standards 4Nov 22, 2010 7:47 am As Joel_Landscaper mentioned, 450mm is the recommended and "standard" joist spacing. Although, you can increase this to a wider spacing if you increase the joist depth (eg. 140mm compared to 90mm). The way to check if this has been taken into account is by checking if the bounce you are experiencing is on the decking boards (in the middle of the 600 spacing) or on the joist (check by bouncing on the joist). Either way, speaking to a few decking timber suppliers who happen to be ex deck builders, they have all suggested supports that are way below Australian Standards. Eg, one suggested that I only have 1 bearer for a 1.6m span even though AS says that it should be 1.2 max. That's a 133% loading on a bearer! This will be tricky for you to get them to rectify etc. But I am sure you will get help here on this forum. Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10973 Building Standards; Getting It Right! Don't think they are designed for double brick. WA has a particular way of building and unfortunately that's the way a large amount of sills are finished. 3 7011 I believe this is correct. From the picture you can see the power was put in last so the electrician knew where the water was. Really it's a common sense issue more… 4 5159 |
