Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 19, 2010 12:34 pm We have to continuously supply glazed entries to an important customer, they have left the choice to us, which we would like to supply . Wanting to please as many people as possible, can you tell me which you would prefer? I may follow this up with a third choice, but I would really like to know the answer to this one first. PLEASE VOTE. If you really would not like either, your comments would be invaluable... Thank you everyone for help with this and with past help. VOTE 2Nov 19, 2010 1:40 pm All Frosted Glass for me, I guess it depends on the orientation and situation of the door, I would choose frosted glass for privacy, but I am thinking of the door on our house which is 6 meters from the footpath so I don’t want anyone looking in especially since we don’t want and blinds or curtains on it (for maximum light). But if privacy isn’t any issue, being able to look out the door might be a bonus. Hope it helps Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If we had had the block width to have a double door entry & side lights, I would still have had clear glazing. Just love it! OUr neighbourhood is extremely quiet, so privacy is not really a high priority. In a built-up area where break-ins are high though, clear glazing would definitely not be an option - this, from personal experience Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 5Nov 19, 2010 2:19 pm I much prefer frosted glass on front doors and side lights - I dont like people seeing in and I dont want to have to put any window furnishings there. Would never have clear glass there myself. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 6Nov 19, 2010 2:23 pm I LOVE the clear glass doors. In an entry where you can get away with the clear glass, I would always specify clear. But most entries these days are NOT private, so I had to vote for frosted. VOTE 7Nov 19, 2010 2:37 pm If it's for a commercial application I would rather be able to see people coming and going. If it's for residential, I love clear glass when it's a property with other forms of privacy (ie gated). Frosted doesn't bring in enough light for me. People make one happy, not houses? I do not think so. Houses are more to be trusted than people. VOTE 9Nov 19, 2010 3:55 pm For a normal residential building ie normal setback / neighbouring houses fairly close I would choose frosted. For our home I chose clear in our door panels but we are 80ish metres back from the road behind a large electric gate and our foyer opens onto only a hallway - which means anyone who does finally make it down our driveway only sees a blank wall. We also chose to not go with sidelights for the same privacy issue - we instead had a clear glass highlight over the doors - still lets in heaps of light but you can't see through it because of the height. An aunty and uncle of DH's have double aluminium framed glass doors as well as large sidelights on either side. But for something different (and because they are the biggest lovers of all things Egyptian) they have stained glass inserts of an Egyptian male and female Pharoah on each one and then their first names in egyptian on the sidelights. Each to their own LOL. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 10Nov 19, 2010 3:58 pm kyton ... Wow... not an option in ours... Ed Thanks everyone, keep them coming... EDIT - imagine if the guy who translated their names for the sidelights has a sense of humour... what might it actually read in Egyptian... VOTE 11Nov 19, 2010 5:01 pm Oooohhh that's quite a personal choice, what have they ased for in the past or so they seem to have a preference one or the other? I guess you wouldn't be asking then would you? It depends how far through you are going to see; re privacy or not a problem? I would have chosen frosted, or have clear with the little blinds so you can have it clear or not. Does that help, make sense? Ahh I need more caffeine. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 12Nov 19, 2010 8:38 pm I prefer clear glass if there is not going to be a front security door so I can see who is at the door before I open it. If privacy was an issue with the rooms that would be visible then I would go for the frosted glass. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 14Nov 20, 2010 7:48 am I wanted to vote "all frosted", but then read your comments Ed about a third option/comment (so I didn't vote). My question is - what is the exact nature of the "development" - eg. is it a residential development complex / private houses / commercial / other? I suppose I'm a big fan of privacy , so ... my answer takes that in mind for each of the development types If it's private houses, I'd go for solid doors with small-ish frosted glass inserts on top part, or just solid doors (no sidelights). Well, if it has to be with sidelights, I'd obviously use frosted. If it's a residential development complex, you can use anything. I'd prefer clear glass. For commercial, I'd always use clear glass. Actually, wherever I say "clear glass", I would actually prefer it tinted , if that's on your option list at all My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... The only time I wouldn't have clear is if the view into the house was down a straight hallway into the dining area or living room. We have a curved hallway so the view in is of a hallway and then a wall. I love the amount of light it lets in and the view out. BUT, I don't like fully glazed doors. I like something to break it up. We went with doors similar to Southies pic. If it was fully glazed, my idiot dog would try to run straight through it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. VOTE 17Nov 20, 2010 2:47 pm I like the clear glazing look in panels so I've voted this way despite the fact that we have a solid wood front door with no glazing at all. ( DH doesn't like them) But if the door glass looked right into living space I wouldn't want it at all. I'd want frosted/obscured glass. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 18Nov 20, 2010 2:58 pm I voted for clear, but I agree that it depends on the house design. If the front door looks straight into a room, I'd have to choose frosted, because I prefer the clean uncluttered look, which you don't get with curtains or blinds on front doors. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 19Nov 20, 2010 3:05 pm I voted for clear, with the feeling that if someone is going to go for the 'wow factor' of a commercial style door for residential use, the frosted glass wouldn't create the same effect. Re: Please help me choose... glazed front entry door... VOTE 20Nov 21, 2010 3:05 pm I had a clear glass front door, sidelights and highlight on my place and it was a mistake. For starters every man and his dog walks past and looks in like there is a show in town. I tried to put window film on them but after many attempts that stuff left my sanity hanging by a thread. I hate to think what it would cost me to replace all the glass with the frosted variety. In hindsight I'd not bother with any glazing at all because I notice you loose quite a bit of heat through it and it just allows another break in point. But if I had to choose I'd go frosted.
