Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 03, 2010 7:37 pm Hi All, It came to my attention that we were we are building is reasonably close to a reasonably busy 4 lane road. When we go there on the weekend - there is hardly any traffic but when I went to during the weekday - lo and behold all 4 lanes are being used with some pretty big trucks. The road for those familiar is Campbelltown Road at Crossroads. Our house is being built is the 4th houses back from the road, about 150m from the road, with an estate road in between. As we are building a double story do you reckon we should be ok from a distance that far back? The developers aren't putting any sound barriers but they have said that they are doing some kind of housing sound barrier (where they say that the houses built behind us will be clustered to eliminate the noise. Is anyone familiar with what they are talking about? Any info would be great. We NEVER heard the road noise. I guess because we so in tune with it after being there for so long. We only heard the usual thing you'd hear anywhere - a car accident or a horn! 2nd I lived a street away from the Adelaide airport - OMG it was NOISEY but after a few months we never heard the noise. They are noisy at first but then you dint notice it.. Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 3Nov 03, 2010 7:53 pm how long is a piece of string? Range to a road is not the only factor. You need to assess the acoustics of the street. I have been on some set back houses of a main road that were quite. Others 8 houses back and noisy as hell. Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 4Nov 03, 2010 7:58 pm thanks cooped.. maybe your right should be fretting about it now.. i guess i worried about it coz i could have chosen a block further back (with other pros/cons) if i was that worried about the noise. but alas i think we will live with it.. eve deller... acoustics aren't good as we are set higher than the road so any house noise barrier could potentially go over these as we are 2 storey house anyone have any idea what this house noise barrier is that they are talking about? Also any other objects in between or around. We lived in a house which was 1 street back from a fairly busy street and parallel to it (only 2 houses apart, direct line) and it was eerily quiet (actually, heavenly quiet ), even at peak times. I think we were a little bit higher than the busy road, not heaps, but maybe 1 or 2 meters max. In between and around were single level houses (only next door to us was 2 storey and maaaaybe also one or two houses further away). Yes, we were also a single level house, on the higher side of the street (verrrrrrry slightly higher). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... When we had the door closed we didn't hear it at all. They even used to blast their horn before they were going through the intersection. It used to scare the crap out of people who were visiting. But we didn't notice it after awhile. Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 13Nov 07, 2010 8:24 am thanks Ed and Machiars!!! i don't think that it is going to be a problem but at the moment probably overanalyzing as can't wait to get into our new place - which is 6 months away Project History Deposit - 20/4/2010 Land Settled - 20/8/2010 Council - 30/9/2010 Slab - 17/11/2010 Bricks - 28/01/2011 Roof - 5/02/2011 Gyprock - 4/03/2011 Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 14Nov 07, 2010 9:35 am One house wasn't that far from the freeway, service road then 3 roads back, never heard a sound. Between the freeway and us there was a hill. One of our other houses was only 2 streets away from a train track and we never heard anything, again there was a hill in the way! Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 15Nov 07, 2010 10:18 am Our present home is in a noisy location compared to the others we have lived in, yet we are in a court. A road passes behind the blocks in the bowl of the court, being in the country we only have those coarse bitumen main roads which are noisy compared to asphalt, and that road has an 80 km/h limit. The traffic noise is noticable but not obtrusive. One of those blocks in the bowl of the court is yet to be built on, so it might end up a bit quieter in the future. It is comparitively noisy here anyway - planes, trains and automobiles - and sometimes a bit of industrial noise as well. *sigh* it would be so different living in a nice, quiet big capital city! Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 16Nov 07, 2010 10:54 am I've lived on a main road and I'd say that even after 8 years I became used to it but I still noticed it all the time. I never used the backyard much because there wasn't really any peace and quiet there - just more traffic noise. I never had any trouble sleeping but I never used to leave the front door or windows open because it was too noisy to watch TV. The worst part was exiting and entering the driveway - an accident waiting to happen. The other drawback is that your house will only ever be worth what the low end of the market is because no one really wants to live near a main road. That said if you are one house over such as the next street then the sound is considerably lower - I wouldn't have an issue with that situation. Re: How far from a busy road to not hear any noise? 17Nov 07, 2010 12:38 pm I've lived in a flight path and next to a train line, and I just got used to the noise. Currently I live a few hundred metres from the Northern Hwy and a few kms from the Hume Hwy, both heavy truck routes. We are up on a hill, and if it's a still night I can hear the trucks as the change into a lower gear going downhill on the Hume. Yet, I rarely hear anything from the Northern because it is on the other side of the rise of the hill, even though they also change gear as they slow into town and as they come up the hill out of the town. I hear pretty much nothing during the day. As others have said, the landscape will play as big a part as distance. If the noise is problematic after you move in, some screening trees may help. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself.
