Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 28, 2010 6:16 pm Hi there. I have small verandah on my house which there is a deck underneath. The verandah is 4.8m long (along the house) and is 1.5m wide. The rafter spacing is 900mm. There is a beam the length of the verandah (4.8m) which is a 190mm x 45mm lasercut treated pine. There is a post at each of the beam and a post in the middle. I want see if I can get rid of the post in the middle as it is impeding my deck area and is a pain. So I guess my question is how could I do this, would I need to replace the existing beam with a bigger one or is the existing one ok actually. Or could I strengthen the existing one with another beam of the same size bolted on to it or even using some steel perhaps. Any advise appreciated. Thanks Kim Re: Beam span on a verandah 2Nov 29, 2010 11:30 am Hi Kim, It can be done - below is a pic of how big our beam is... the alfresco spans a total lenght of 6910mm - we deleted the post from the middle so we could extend the alfresco later on without a post being in the middle. However, I am unsure who you would speak to? Maybe an architectural engineer as they would know how big the beam would be based on the load that it would need to hold up. Hope this helps a bit! Re: Beam span on a verandah 5Dec 01, 2010 8:26 pm Sorry you could also use smaller beam and add a steel channel to the back of the beam. I have 2 6000mm spans using 195x45 F7 with a 150x75x5mm duragal channel and these were engineered to be ok for a pergola support.
