Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 13, 2010 6:46 am Hello... Have been looking for a forum like this for a while now and this is my first post. I am a 'serial' self builder here in the UK and will be moving back to Australia after 19 years in January 2011. I'm currently in the process of trying to sort through two double garages full of tools and the left overs of 3 self builds. My query in this post is in relation to the pipe sizes that are used as standard in Australia, particularly in Victoria but am surmising it will be the same across all states. In the UK we use as 15 and 22mm copper pipes as standard and increasingly, some builders are starting to use the push fit plastic pipes which are obviously of the same dimensions. If it's the same in Australia, I will box up many of the fittings an plumbing tools I have but if not....they'll just have to go. Will no doubt have many more questions but hope this one is pretty straight forward. Thanks in advance I Re: Plumbing pipe sizes in Australia... 2Oct 13, 2010 7:35 am I think you need to be more specific about what you are after because there is heaps & heaps of different pipe sizes and fittings that we use here. For example, you can choose from pvc, copper, brass, abs, stainless steel, HDPE, PP, etc. depending on your application and the combination and sizes are endless really. Re: Plumbing pipe sizes in Australia... 3Oct 16, 2010 1:36 am Hiya... Yep....good point.....! I was referring specifically to the main hot and cold pipes, and the flow and return pipes for the central heating. These are normally 22mm and 15mm in either copper or plastic in the UK. Ta... Re: Plumbing pipe sizes in Australia... 5Oct 16, 2010 7:32 am In most domestic applications where copper pipes are used, the sizes are 1/2 and 3/4 inch. Do a google search on plumbing suppliers in Melbourne Victoria and if you can sign in/up to their trade area, you'll be able to compare the differences in products and sizes from the UK. Re: Plumbing pipe sizes in Australia... 6Oct 16, 2010 9:20 am I brought over 15mm & 22mm pipe bender when we moved - when I looked into it once here, I came to the conclusion there were the most useless thing that we brought given the size difference. I did a complete bathroom in UK (self taught) however I am not sure I would be allowed to do the same here (rules regulations etc) plus I would not have the time so thew them away. Re: Plumbing pipe sizes in Australia... 7Oct 17, 2010 1:15 pm Depending on what state you will be moving to then the regs are pretty cruisy as you can pretty much do a complete fitout without permits, usually only if you are doing additions to the existing building structural work you should be ok. so if you want to move vanities/showers etc then you can buy attachments that connect copper to plastic pipes.. You can however still buy copper pipes... DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 3 pipes are coming from upstairs bathroom. 40mm from bathroom sink, 50mm from shower and another 50mm from the bathtub.
