Browse Forums General Discussion Re: privacy from 2 story neighbours!! 21Mar 10, 2013 11:31 pm smorggzzz I love that idea! We worked out that it would take an extra 2m above our fence to obscure their view from their windows into our backyard. :S I really want to do this!! I am hopefully getting a quote from someone next week ....all going well Oh my! I hope your neighbours put up some sort of curtains really quickly when they move in!! I remember when I was installing our venetian curtains and I saw our 2 story neighbour walk past their ensuite window completely naked...and the window was frosted too...but no curtains! I think it is really unfair that we cant walk out into our backyards in pjs or are constantly wary about our neighbours looking in! My neighbour had a massive go at me about how "what do you expect when you live next to a 2 story house, of course we will look over!" Along with HEAPS of other issues, he even smsd us when we were having landscaping done to say "I like what you are doing with your backyard, can we have the number of the people you are going through?" WHAT? I dont get on a ladder and peer into your yard!! The icing on the cake was early in the morning turing to see him watching me watering from the top window while he was half naked! I copped a mouthful of abuse on the phone because I felt uncomfortable with him looking over??? Yep I know, doenst make sence huh? There are so many other things I could mention to you...the stealing, the abuse, the trespassing.....oh the joys!! So I NEED something done and quickly but dont want him to hassle us and get council. Makes it so uncomfortable to live.... Thank you for your help Re: privacy from 2 story neighbours!! 22Mar 11, 2013 10:21 am Ugh. I have a double story; since it is a corner block, only the master bedroom windows overlook neighbours but honestly, the only times I go up there to look out is to see the weather or some other distance view. Sure, I can see into neighbours yards (they are single story) but why would I want to? Rude, boring, damages neighbourly relations. Nope, being a peeping tom is a bad idea. However. I do sometimes walk around my home naked or with very little on. My. Home. Unless someone is deliberately flashing themselves, it is their business how many clothes they wear inside their house. I honestly do not care if people see me. True, I avoid the uncurtained sidelights on the font door and I do angle the Venetians in the bathroom to avoid people on the footpath seeing in, but that my neighbour standing on their laundry step can see over the fence onto the deck and into my family/rumpus room? I never think of it. And I will not agree that people have to be 'fit for public' in their private homes, or that neighbours have a right to look at or into one's house and not risk seeing something private. Though... bathrooms need window coverings. Really can't argue that one. Ever. They'll be the first window coverings to go in on handover day! HD Land settled May '14. We worked out that it would take an extra 2m above our fence to obscure their view from their windows into our backyard. :S I really want to do this!! I am hopefully getting a quote from someone next week ....all going well Bear in mind that there are regulations on height of boundary fences. Extending your fence by an additional 2m is going to be against regulation. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: privacy from 2 story neighbours!! 24Mar 11, 2013 11:15 pm Yeah I know that by extending the fence by that much will be against regulations but I hoped it could be done in some way. I'm hoping that we can maybe put a garden screen on our side of our property a little away from the fence thereby following the regulations. Re: privacy from 2 story neighbours!! 25Mar 17, 2013 6:58 am We are building on an acreage block and the original house on the block before it was subdivided is 1m from the boundary fence. It is a single storey house, due to building envelope restrictions we built a double storey house and we didn't realise that there was a 700mm fill as well. We are towering over the other house. To add to the lack of privacy there is only rural fencing. The neighbour does not seem fussed with any privacy measures and his girls bedroom windows are 1m from our fence and we can look into them from our kitchen and alfresco. We are more concerned than they are. We have bamboo that we are about to plant. One is Chinese dwarf which is thick and grows to 3m in height. The other species which I can't recall the name grows to 7 metres. These will be going along the fence line. While waiting for the bamboo to make a screen we will be putting up wooden screens. Another good screening plant is 'goodbye neighbour' this very quick growing. Another is a viburnum hedge. They are quick growing and have large leaves so don't need much pruning Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: privacy from 2 story neighbours!! 26May 29, 2013 8:53 am What kek says is right. These are regulations managed by the Relevant Building Surveyor. The issue is what is there first? An existing dwelling will "control" the new one. When issuing your building permit, the building surveyor will look at the existing house situation. No houses adjacent? Different issue. cheerios.
