Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 12, 2010 8:29 am Hi All, This might seem like a silly question, but please bear with me, Our future neighbors have started the fencing on the property and have contacted us as we are supposed to pay 50% of the cost - which is fine. The fence we are getting is the lapped paling fence using slash pine(1.8 m high) We went to have a look at the site, and the fencing is almost completed but we really don't like the fact that we have the horizontal "rails" on our side and they have the smooth side. http://www.fotothing.com/fencer/photo/b ... 5624a67d1/ Just wanted to know if we have a choice over it or is it that they have initiated the fencing process so they get to choose it ? My hubby is not too fussed about it, but I really don't like it Any advise/ suggestions much appreciated !! Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 2Oct 12, 2010 8:36 am When we put up our fence in our last house, we consulted our neighbours and gave them the smooth side because it was more visible to them and we were going to plant out our side...but if you aren't it would bother me too. You are paying half, some discussion would have been nice. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 4Oct 12, 2010 8:48 am Someone has to get the "wrong" side. I think it's actually quite useful as you can hang things off the rails. They should have spoken to you about it though. Plz help ! 5Oct 12, 2010 8:55 am My neighbours actually wanted the rail side because they have a spa and, to meet regulations, couldn't have people climbing the fence on my side. Have yet to discuss it with my neighbour on the other side but I agree with all of the others; you should have at least been asked. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 6Oct 12, 2010 8:58 am You normally get one of each for side fences and its a coin flip for the back. We were "lucky" and got smooth for both sides in the rear yard. The front part of the southern side (no windows) is rail side to us and the whole rear fence is rail side to us. my block intersects with 4 other blocks though so its a bit of a mess. Also there is nothing stopping you putting up palings on your side. perhaps you could try to split the cost with your neighbor as it appears they either chose for you or it was an oversight and they just got the smooth side by pot luck Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Edit: That's a very nice looking fence by the way! Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 9Oct 12, 2010 11:35 am Hey all Thanks everyone for your responses. Yes.. it would have been good if they would have asked us and not just gone ahead and started the work. Anyways .. it is not too bad since that side is the narrow side of our block so I guess we wouldn't be using it as much. @sheepdog : That is not our fence .. hehe got the image off google. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 10Oct 12, 2010 3:57 pm Well there are two sides to this. My parents want the rail side as they think that people see your property from the other side and it's nice and smooth. Wifes parents feel the opposite, they want to look out and see nice and smooth. We had the latter done. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 12Oct 12, 2010 8:39 pm We have one side and the back which are rail side, they are both near new. The other side is smooth side and much older. When it comes time to replace it, we will let the neighbours have the smooth side for security (their grandkids have climbed the fence to retrieve balls even though it is a high fence) and for the consistent look. I don't really mind smooth or rails, but would prefer if all 3 sides are the same. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 13Jul 22, 2011 10:51 pm Hi guys, I awaking an old thread but I would like to know if all timber fences actually have a good and bad sides. I am under the impression that there are fences that are okay on both sides i.e. no timber "railings" on either side. I am referring to the below designs. Anyone cares to comment and advise? and Thanks. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 14Jul 25, 2011 11:22 am Those example are the same as a regular pine paling fence. It just has capping on it. It will have rails on the other side. You could always choose to have palings installed on both sides, but it will incur a greater cost. Also, when trying to find out who gets the "good" side, most suburban properties get one good and one bad. The rear yard is just pot luck usually. Re: "Wrong" side of the fence ? Plz help ! 15Jul 25, 2011 1:31 pm We've only got one side to fence, other two sides are established and we have the 'good' side on side and back. The remaining unfenced side is on the 'dead' side of the house, where as the neighbours will be looking out onto the fence from their entertainment area, so we'll have the railings/wrong side, unless for some reason they want it. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Hey everyone Not for me or anyone I know, just generally interested.
