Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 03, 2010 4:31 pm Hi All, We are thinking of buying a block and building in one of the new estates in Epping North and would like some opinions about the area. We currently live in the outer eastern suburbs in Shire of Yarra Ranges and are wanting a change and a new house. I have done some googling and found that Epping/Whittlesea Shire is quite disadvantaged on the SEISA scale and I was wondering if it was a bit "feral"??? I like the proximity to the city and the idea of estate living, but don't want to live in a rough area. What are the thoughts of those living in these new estates and others who have lived there and no longer?? Re: New Estates in Epping, Victoria 2Oct 03, 2010 6:43 pm Not sure about the area in terms of the population - but I have a family friend that has recently built in the area and it cost her a mint in rock removal... but don't know much else about the area sorry. There's a lot of things in the works such as a shopping centre bigger than Chadstone, a new train station pass epping and also the new Melbourne Market is currecntly being built. Not sure what you mean about Feral but I think it's a nice area and people are ok as well. And does it account for a large proportion of the City of Whittlesea being farms? 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' All outer suburbs would fall into that category, as people with lower incomes tend to buy cheaper properties, and where is land cheapest? Outer suburbs.... If you'd asked me 20 years ago, I would have said that yes, Epping is a bit rough. We used to make a lot of hillbilly jokes..... But demographics change, and I think that with the huge expansion of new housing, you get a different mix of people. I really don't know what the population mix is like now though - maybe trawl around the ABS site for some data if that's important to you. It certainly doesn't have the problems or reputation of a certain other suburb further west along Cooper St... That area used to have a lot of hoons in hotted up cars doing ‘laps’ and burnouts. Used to see plenty of streets with burnout marks. Might still be the case, just go for a drive and see if there are tyre marks. Regardless, it is definitely a booming area and you could do a lot worse with other outer areas. Re: New Estates in Epping, Victoria 12Nov 27, 2010 8:31 am If you are looking to build I think Epping is a good bet. It has existing infrastructure and with the development going on I would think the demographic of the area will change as more money comes in. It's not far out of Melbourne at all compared with other developments such as down in the south-east. Anyway do you use the Western Ring Road? Thats one of the worst frreeways you would want to be stuck in during peak time especially driving to Epping. I have never heard of this shopping centre that you say is bigger than Chadstone being built, could you point me into the right direction as to which centre this is?
