Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 20, 2010 4:56 pm Hey all, My father is a 'Can do' man and after reading a lot of threads I am wondering if there is any installations in the house which can be done by yourself (or a handy dad) to save some $$$$.... or in our case, spend it on other stuff!! I am thinking about just have the door frame put in by the builder and buying all the doors at an auction. Anything else that I could do this way? I came up with painting, and the data cabling (even then I need a mate who is licensed to help do it so that it is legal). I haven't found anything else that I'm competent at, sadly. Sometimes I wish I did a trade after finishing school instead of going into IT This was quite funny. My husband and I are useless with our peices of Grad papers. My dad finished school when he was 13 and can do pretty much anything the law lets him. My husband has a lot to live up to!!! Yeah, the builder says he will let us know what we can do, as he is quite helpful in telling us the difference we would save, I understand he has to pay overheads though, so if it is too inconvenient i wil let him do it. Thanks guys. Re: What would have have done yourself? 6Sep 20, 2010 9:28 pm We were originally just doing the flooring landscaping kitchen blinds and supplying some bathroom items BUT our builder went bust so we ended up finishing the whole place off ourselves LOL Some things are worth waiting for. Re: What would have have done yourself? 7Sep 20, 2010 10:58 pm Hi, Depends how brave you are - i think DIY can cause more problems at times, i've seen people do something themselves only to not be happy with it and end up paying more money getting someone to redo it. Some things you can do: - Tiling - Paving - Landscaping - Lay carpet - Painting - Fitting blinds (purchase through Ikea etc if standard window sizes) - Timber decking outside Only thing i'll say is, the people who do these things are trades. This is something they do for a living where as most DIY people have their first crack at decking, and chances are never will again. The question to ask is that can you live with it if you're not happy with it. As someone who see's a lot of trades, and see's a lot of homes get built, and having personally renovated myself, i think the best bet is to do the research on what things cost, set up a budget and priority hit list then execute it. If you see trades out on site who can help, a lot of them will do a bit of work at a good rate as it helps them keep going between jobs. The DIY project can be broken into two major steps. Planning and Design and Construction. Both of these steps are as important as one another to ensure you give… 0 5172 Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
