Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 12, 2010 1:21 pm my DD's big bed has arrived. I am concerned about the gap between the bed and the mattress. It's exactly the same bed as DS's one except white. DS's size is fine. I measured them all up, and the width of the mattresses is the same (104cm). DS's bed width (from inside rail to inside rail) is 108cm, whereas DD's is 110cm. Only 2cm difference, but it's 6cm on the bed. I spoke to the bed shop and they said depending on the measurements, they might get the bed re-made, ie smaller, to fit the mattress more properly. Should I bother? Do you think the extra width is going to get annoying, or DD might hurt herself on it if she gets out of bed and knocks herself on the extra width? I want her to have this bed for 10 years or more. It's a king single. here are some pics. in these pics the other side of the mattress is flush with the bed, so this is the total gap, ie it would halve if it was centred on the bed. you can see the slats look a bit short too. I like things to fit and be nice and streamlined...(yes I am part virgo)...just thinking that the mattress may never be straight - would it slide? If so that would annoy me plus the issue that DD may hurt herself...I know my DD would when getting out of bed but she's a tad clumsy like her mum. In my world it would annoy me to no end, bit it really depends on whether it bothers you. My house and my rants.... - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=26937 We are in!!!...and still unpacking. Thankfully there are always Tim Tams Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 3Sep 12, 2010 1:54 pm will they let you keep the current one while the other is made? is it a drama to wait. I think I'd be tempted to get them to remake it even if you can;t keep the bed. After all it's because it is over sized you are worried about your daughter injuring herself. It looks quite gappy and I too would be worried about it slipping and sliding on the too big base. A little gap either side is normal but 2 cm difference on the same bed when your sons has already got a gap on his is too much.. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 4Sep 12, 2010 1:58 pm thank you ladies I think you have helped confirm what I thought too... no it's no drama to wait, DD has made it very clear she won't be sleeping in it any time soon anyway I think it would look "better" once it's made up with sheets and everything, but not THAT much better. my sheets and blankets aren't super chunky. the guy said a gap of 3-4cm is normal. this is definitely a fair bit more than that. so I'll give them a call I think. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 5Sep 12, 2010 5:50 pm Very interesting post and very timely. Our son went into his King Single yesterday (and had a great night sleep from 715 til 715 so very happy with that. Hes only 19 months but very proud of his big bed!). Anyway, we put his mattress on yesterday and thought that there was way too much room between the bed and mattress as for your piccy. Your post got me to go up and have a look. We have a DD who also has a King Single. Hers : Mattress is 106cm (as it should be) but inside is 103cm which means the mattress doesnt sit right inside (which we've never really noticed as we've always had it pushed against the wall.). His: Mattress is just under 107cm (guess there must be some manufacturing difference) BUT inside is 111cm which leaves too much slop as far as I'm concerned. We put it up yesterday and just tolerated it but now that you've posted this I may well call the bed store tomorrow and find out the deal. Ingrid Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 6Sep 12, 2010 6:51 pm My youngest sons bed - also king single - has this same issue - I do find it is better once the bed has all the sheets etc on it, and I just align it to the side that faces the door, so it looks tidy, and the gap in on the other side - He is four though, so not too much of an issue safety wise - and the biggest bonus for me is it is super easy to make, unlike my oldest sons bed, which is a queen, and the mattress fits the frame so snugly it almost breaks your back the effort required to lift the mattress just to get the sheets snugly fitted underneath each time you have to remake the bed.... I guess, if they are happy to remake for you, and you can hold on the 'defective' one in the meantime I would definitely consider taking the offer up if it bothers you Building on the Sunshine Coast - Land settled 22nd July 2009 Building contract finally signed (after much deliberation on our part) 11th November 2009 Building commences 25th January 2010 - small local builder End of June - almost completed fit out 26th July - MOVE IN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 7Sep 12, 2010 7:15 pm thanks for your replies ingrid and moogles. Ingrid that's interesting that your DD's mattress is bigger than the bed! also interesting that both your king single mattresses are 107cm approx, that's a full 3cm bigger than both of mine! (and we bought both our mattresses from different suppliers. I wonder if where you measure it makes a difference? I measured mine across the middle of the mattress not at the end. I think the mattress looks smaller in the middle.) If the mattress was 107cm that would fit nicely in the 110cm frame and I might not have this problem. Moogles that's a good point about the bed being easier to make. But I don't find DS's very hard to make and it fits a bit more snugly. I'm still going to ring them tomorrow, will let you all know how I get on. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 8Sep 12, 2010 8:16 pm Will be interesting to see what the outcome is. For what its worth it shouldnt matter where its measured from for the mattress. Their is a universal sizing that king single mattresses should be 160cm x 220cm (length). Also I have found that once the doona cover goes over it, it hides it and the kids run (as they do ) to dive, jump, whatever, onto the bed and *whack*, shin bones...ouch. Also when making the bed the same thing will happen to you. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 15Sep 12, 2010 9:34 pm ingrid Will be interesting to see what the outcome is. Correction ... 1060 x 2030mm ...your measurement is a little larger than a queen. http://www.the-pillow.com.au/resources/bed_sizes.php EDIT: well wadda ya know ...a queen size bed here is as big as a king size in the US .... don't tell any Texans. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 16Sep 13, 2010 10:21 am I just spoke to the bed shop again. The first time I rang was before I had taken the measurements and I spoke to a guy called N. this time a guy called D answered the phone and he tried to tell me oh no they make their beds all the same size, we've never had any problems with it, yada yada yada. But I stayed firm and said well N said that 3-4cm was acceptable this is quite clearly 6cm difference and I think it's too much. so he told me to send the photos through and he will arrange for it to be fixed. about to send them through now. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 17Sep 13, 2010 10:46 am I had the same problem with my DD bed and mattress, I bought both of different suppliers, I think the problem is the bed frame / suites are getting made offshore and the mattress I bought off a local manufacturer, the locals are making them to fit our bed frames but for some reason the offshore bed frames are made to different measurements. I was told that my mattress is a standard double mattress and there was nothing they could do. Said it was like everything thats getting made offshore, it's to different measurements than ours e.g. clothing, shoes, etc. So when it comes time to upgrade again, will get the bed suite first and measure the actual base and have to get a mattress made to measure. Who cares, they should still both be the same size! and the same shop sold us both the mattress and the bed. Re: gap between mattress and bed too big? 19Sep 13, 2010 10:54 am Well if both locally made, then I would be pushing for new mattress to be made to fit the bed. My DD put up with it and she keeps putting her feet on the edge and has ripped one valance already, mind you her shins are ok but mine are not, I'm the one who changes to sheets every week and it's a pain. Hope you have success. Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. I will be happy with that! even if the mattress is a couple of cm short of the official 106cm, it's the same as my other one so I can't really complain. Plenty big enough for my munchkins!
