Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 08, 2010 9:42 pm Hello, We need some help with choosing external colours for our new house. After much research, we are even more lost than when we started! It's for a single storey skillion house, with a mix of cladding and colourbond. We quite like the Paperbark or Dune colourbond but we are not sure which paint we should use for the cladding. We looked at something in the same tone but slightly lighter. And gutters and facia, should they be the same colour as the roof or different to bring some contrast? The roof will be hardly visible from the street, we were thinking of using Shale grey. Windows, again we were thinking of a creamy colour. We like light/neutral colour schemes. We are going to have a red bitumen driveway and a native garden at the front, which will bring some colours. The double garage door will be wood like colour. We are thinking of putting some cedar cladding above the door as a feature. The entry door will be wood. If anyone has something similar or even different that has worked for a similar house or some experience in choosing colours, we'd love some advice. It is an important decision and any help would be more than welcome. Thanks! Re: Help with colour scheme for skillion house 2Sep 08, 2010 10:57 pm Our house has a skillion roof and a mix of weatherboards and colorbond. We have Dune colorbond with Dulux Raw Cashew Nut for the weatherboards. The Raw Cashew Nut is just slightly lighter than the Dune but still has some colour so it doesn't look washed out. We have a timber feature wall at the front. Our windows have to be tinted for our energy requirements so we chose black window frames and Monument fascias and gutters. Our roof is Surfmist to reflect the most heat. The contrast of our weatherboards against the colorbond Dune: The colours change quite a lot with lighting. This photo was taken late afternoon, when the Raw Cashew Nut is in the sun it is quite creamy, whereas in the shade it looks more greyish. When browsing the forum before I saw someone else recommend Raw Cashew nut with Dune Colorbond. The darker facia, gutters and windows bring some contrast. I'm not sure yet with the darker windowns as we wouldn't need to tint ours. I'm worried it is going to stand out too much. Overall it goes very well with the wood. It is definitely an option. It's probably a bit lighter than I had imagined initially but I haven't got set ideas. Thanks again for your help. Mathilde Re: Help with colour scheme for skillion house 5Sep 09, 2010 1:58 pm There are no foundations - yet! The whole house is sitting on temporary stumps atm. Hopefully it will be lifted to become highset by the end of this week - we finally have the lifting truck at the house at least. As to why we went with this highly unusual building option? Our builder told us it would be cheaper because there would be no need for scaffolding (but he didn't take into account that the skillion went so high that they needed scaffolding even with the low stumps). He also didn't take into account the overall house dimensions which have meant the lifting truck can't do it on its own - further complicating things. Meanwhile, we wait and wait and wait... The house will be set on steel posts, and we have plans to build in underneath at a later date. Re: Help with colour scheme for skillion house 6Sep 09, 2010 2:05 pm Matlan It's probably a bit lighter than I had imagined initially but I haven't got set ideas. The Raw Cashew Nut is quite a bit lighter than I had originally imagined too. I definitely wanted something that was lighter than Dune so there was a definite contrast and I definitely wanted the Dune. I love the Raw Cashew Nut in the shade and living in NQ we tend to spend most time in the shady areas when we're outside. You could consider sticking with Dune for both colorbond and cladding - the difference in texture and shadowing would probably be enough. There is a pic of the facade and I have listed the colours we are using. Maybe they will help you. Where are you building and what builder are you using? A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. I like the Sage Garden colour but don't seem to find it on the dulux website. Picking colours has been tricky because the colour samples seem so much darker than the examples we've seen outdoors on larger surfaces. We are trying to stay away from a grey colour scheme, to bring in a more earthy colour, but still lighter than dune to bring in the contrast. For the fascia/gutters I think we're going to go with Ironstone. We prefer it to monument or jasper. Paperbark for colourbond wall, crosby (Taubman) for cladding, Ironstone for gutters/fascia and shale grey skillion roof. What do you think? Paperbark for colourbond wall, crosby (Taubman) for cladding, Ironstone for gutters/fascia and shale grey skillion roof. What do you think? Sounds great! I've seen a few Shale Grey roofs (after we picker our Surfmist one) and they look great - light but not overly bright! Re: Help with colour scheme for skillion house 14Sep 11, 2010 1:25 pm I've tried to attach an elevation but I'm getting this message: Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached. I've tried reducing the size of the photo but it doesn't work. I've seen people talk about it before. I'll see what I can do...
