I like the idea but wondering later when you use a stud detector will it work on steel frame? Also say if you want to hang a 65kg TV on the wall how do you screw the bolt into a steel stud? Would the be strong enough? Another question is about "brick work over windows". Builders usually charge extra for that. Why is that better than no brick over apart from cosmetic reason? Re: Steel frame, brick work over windows 2Aug 31, 2010 4:20 pm Bricks over windows (brick infill) cost more due to requiring a steel lintel to support the bricks above the window. I think it's just a cosmetic thing so it looks seamless. Same goes for brick infill over garages. Re: Steel frame, brick work over windows 3Aug 31, 2010 5:17 pm yes stud finder will be able to detect steel studs, there are special tv brackets that spread the weight over three or more studs, personally I would be installing extra support by some serious steel members in the wall Telecommunications systems, computer Networks and Security systems. It's not built yet.... if you know approximately where the TV is going to be placed, all you need to do is put a 25mm or more plywood sheet supported by noggins flush with the studs before the plaster is fixed, do the same thing in the laundry if you plan to hang a tumble dryer on the wall. Take measurements or a photo for reference purposes. Yes a stud finder will work on a steel frame and screwing into steel frames is easy with metal drill point screws. Cheers.. Re: Steel frame, brick work over windows 5Aug 31, 2010 6:40 pm Yes the brickwork over the windows is for aestheic reasons. IMO just having a fibrecement panel looks awful and I have seen them look really ratty in a couple of years when the paint is peeling and the sheet has lifted or something. Go for the brickwork. Re: Steel frame, brick work over windows 6Sep 01, 2010 8:36 pm Re hanging TV on walls, my steel frame has noggins (roughly 1400mm above the slab). So, I just used construction glue to stick various piece of timber on top of the noggins. Take photos and measurements .... simple and straight forward. Chris This is 100% true.
