palms don't mind being pot bound so you can keep them in pots for years. They will also grow slower so will take some time to reach you desired 5 metre height. However, all plants will want to grow out of pots eventually, it depends on what type of palm it is too. Kentia's will be fine in large pots for years and years for eg.

Correct. The palms will do fine in a good size pot for years.. And if if were me, i would leave them there.. I really dislike they way they grow tall making it difficult to get at the enormous branches that die and hang there for months/years..
Keep them small I say!!
Can you bonsai them??
