INTERNET ISSUES

Need Help People!!!!

Due to circumstances out of my control, i've lost my broadband internet connection and have had to revert back to dial up at the"folks" house. :twisted:

Since we will only be living with the "folks" for another 5-6 months or so, we don't want to sign them up for a long broadband plan which they will not use, once we leave.

Does anyone have any suggestions for ADSL or wireless plans, without the high connection fees and hardware costs? We prefer no contract so that we can evaluate what will work in the new house in the new year.
Not sure what will work there at the moment as there are no houses that are complete as yet in our immediate vicinity...so can't check phone numbers etc. to check who services that area. (As advised in a previous thread).

We might look at VOIP when we move in, but want to make the right choice - and if i find the right plan (that will work a the new place too), i will have it moved with us to the new place (i'm sure that will be at a cost too :evil:

). Am i am asking too much!!!!

Please help or else it seems i have to miss out on the forum for a while :cry:

Phoenix, spoke to the other half for you.

Do you use a laptop, or notebook?

Telstra wholesale enforce a 6 month early termination fee on all ADSL supplying ISPs, so you would be looking at a min 6 month 'contract'.

It costs them all $99 to have you connected, so you're either going to pay that up front, or somewhere in a longer contract period's monthly fees. No such thing as a free lunch.

I'd recommend Internode with Nodephone... depending on whether you have your own modem with VOIP capability or not etc.

Also consider the Virgin (really optus) wireless system for lowish level usage.

Yes i can use either option of laptop and/or desktop pc. No probs.

Hi Parker, my pc is basically on-line from 9.30am to about midnight nearly every day. Dowloads are not too heavy with music or movies, just browsing and playing games (

by the 10yo). We would like 1500/256 if possible with 10 gig min, but anything is better than DIAL- UP!!!!!!!!!! :cry:

Glen said best way to go would be to get yourself a wireless broadband card that you put into your laptop.

You pay a fee for it, of course, but by having the card, you can take your laptop anywhere you go and be constantly connected to the net!

So it want matter about moving house later!

And with any luck, the neighbours won't have secured their router and viola free internet.

Can you run a network with those cards? I suppose then the laptop is the main PC and the others would connect via a router.....It is an expensive option though... (about $300 for the card alone). Does anyone use one of these, do they always have coverage? I know my mobile does not work at our house (darn Vodafone) but hubby's Telstra mobile does :evil:

Ooooooo, so frustrated can't think straight.... see the homeone withdrawl symptoms are kicking in already...Urgh, then the darn line drops out and i have to redial!!!!!!!!!!!! :evil:

Actually, you only need a wireless network card to do that.

Have you tried AAPT and no, I don't work for them lol!.

We were recently in a similar situation - moved to Canberra on a short term lease to see if we liked it first before making a commitment and so did not want to sign any contracts.

I subscribed to AAPT/ADSL with no contract. It took about 5 business days for the modem to arrive (at no cost either) but I was able to use dial-up immediately.

The only exit penalty being the cost of returning the modem. I did all this about six months ago so hopefully they are still offering the same conditions.

We're also looking at another broadband plan (bundled with our home phone).
We've checked telstra, optus, iinet, aapt, tpg and iprimus.
So far, we've shortlisted opstus and iprimus.

If unwired does not suit - ie coverage where you need it.

Have a look at the new Telstra Next G USB connected modem - we just bought 30 of them for a project we are rolling out. Australia post is also selling them. Not sure on plans etc as we were doing a corporate rollout hence that bit is all bundled up by the client.

The vodafone PCMCIA card is also available on some low cost plans no contracts - but the longer the contract the cheaper the card is.
and as Al said - try the free wireless snoop _ I sometimes see open wireless networks from my place :shock:

Hi Phoenix, I am with iprimus and they are pretty good, I am not on any contract and have ADSL and didn't have to pay for the modem either, they just sent it out! Based on my experience with them, I would recommend them to anyone over Telstra! Good luck with it all, we sure would miss out if you couldn't get online everyday!

We went for Netspace. They have better and cheaper plans than iPrimus and Optus.
