Browse Forums General Discussion Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 41Aug 29, 2010 1:29 pm I've followed this thread with interest and have refrained from commenting til now. We can only go by what has been written by the OP, while still keeping in mind that there are three sides to this story. Yours, theirs and the truth. And going only by what has been posted here, there is just one glaring inconsistency.... why would a nosy neighbour who wants to know the ins and outs of your business erect a big tall fence? It simply doesn't make sense. To be perfectly honest, you sound quite paranoid. And before you involve the police, think about this. They have done nothing illegal, by your own admission your husband has verbally abused them on a number of occasions, I'm not quite sure the police would be entirely sympathetic to you. Edited for spelling. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 42Aug 29, 2010 3:20 pm what I don't get is if the lack of privacy was bothering the OP, why didnt they do anything about it? Fence extensions? discuss a taller fence with the neighbour? why abuse someone because there's a simple privacy issue between the properties and they're sitting in their backyard when you happen to walk out and hang up the washing? How do you know she was "listening to you" at the fence, maybe she was weeding I had a similar privacy issue in our backyard, the neighbour behind was constantly complaining about the trees dropping leaves on his paving so we removed them. What we didnt realise is that our house being on a slope is about 2m higher than the neighbours behind so from the sunroom and kitchen we ended up looking straight into their backyards. Many times I'd be sitting in the sunroom and hear voices and look up, and I'd be looking straight at the neighbours one house over, and they'd be looking straight back. For all I know they thought I was sitting there watching them and I did start feeling like some weirdo voyeur just by being near the windows But I totally agree with joles, why would your neighbour go to the trouble and expense of installing a taller fence to block you out if they wanted to watch you so badly. Now you think they've installed a camera just to watch you perform boring everyday tasks? It doesn't make any sense and I think you just need to stop worrying about what your neighbour is up to, you sound like you're much more obsessed with her than she is with you Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 43Aug 29, 2010 5:01 pm It seems like the OP is a tad on the paranoid side. Neighbour sits in yard and gets abused, she builds a fence to gain more privacy. Now she's apparently 'been known' to stand right by the fence and listen. How would the OP know that, if they weren't either spying on her or another neighbour was? Perhaps the conduit is actually for an external light...? Makes sense if it goes up the pergola and easy enough to miss. How would you notice the owl on the pergola, or the neighbour in her yard, if you weren't looking over there all the time...? Yes, there are always 3 sides to something like this and it would seem like the best solution for all involved would be to invite them round (if they're as nosey as you think, they'll be round like a shot! Lol ) In any case, getting to know them better would put your mind at ease and you could even say "I like your owl statue. Where can I get one?" Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 44Aug 29, 2010 8:09 pm Off topic, but... I have neighbours two doors down who are absolutely insane! They're a retired couple, and their middle age daughter. For Christmas this year they got a puppy and that's when all the issues started. We're on a corner block, and our backyard faces the street. We noticed on a number of occasions that something had been digging in our garden, and knocking our dogs water over. At first we thought it was our dog being a little naughty, although this is pretty extreme behaviour for her - she's really well behaved and we'd never had any issues with her digging up garden beds before. Anyway, I was home one day and heard a man yelling... I looked out my kitchen window and saw our neighbour running around our back yard chasing his puppy. It turned out it was their dog destroying our yard and swimming in our dogs water bowl. I went outside and helped him catch his puppy, and then also put some pavers under the fence to stop their little puppy from being able to get under the fence. We noticed however on several other occasions that it appeared their puppy had gotten into the yard, yet the pavers hadn't moved. I got home one day quite late and found that our dogs water had once again been tipped over meaning she had been left for god knows how long without anything to drink. As it turns out, the neighbours in question had been opening our gate and letting their dog into the yard when we're at work... using our yard as some sort of puppy creche!!! I confronted them, and asked them to keep out of our yard and found myself in the firing line - a family of crazed lunatics we're shouting obscenities and grimacing at the audacity of me asking them to STAY OUT OF MY BACK YARD! It was so ridiculous! In the end I had to contact the police and asked them to speak with our neighbours... since then we've had paint thrown at our dog, and mail stolen from our letter box, as well as the neighbours in questions making obscene hand gestures when they drive past. All I can say is, whilst it may seem that the OP is being a little paranoid to some... unless you have expressed the neighbours form hell don't dismiss what you hear. Some people are seriously deranged, and unfortunately for some, they may be living next door! Anyway, we've ended up putting padlocks on all our gates, and have had our solicitor send the neighbours a letter advising that we will take further action against them if necessary. I should add that all our other neighbours are fantastic!!! We really couldn't ask for better... but it only takes one bad egg I guess to leave you with a sour taste *GRRRR* Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 45Aug 29, 2010 10:25 pm @IkonInteriors still off topic ..totally derailed, lol ... I sympathize with you, when I bought my home 10+ yrs ago my neighbours were extremely unfriendly towards me because the house had a stigma attached to it, it had been rented out for the previous 25 yrs (the only rental in the street) to all walks of scum. My neighbours didn't ask if I was going to fix it up, they asked when am I going to knock it down. The disconnected hot water tank had fallen through the rotten floor, rodent poop and used syringes everywhere, a kitchen best described as vermin heaven. I patched it up in 2 weeks, ripped out the kitchen, plastered the cracks, painted the walls and polished the floors...and moved in. My neighbour approached me and said "get rid of your dogs, I don't like dogs" I stepped onto the footpath looked up and down the street then swirled my finger at her property and replied "I think you only own this little patch of land, not this (swirling my finger at the whole street) large strip of land. That's how it began ...10 yrs on she and her adult children 30+ yrs old are still giving me havoc..they've banded other neighbours which extends to a nearby street (lol) to join their hatred ...crazzzzzzy stuff... it doesnt matter that I've saved 2 homes from burning down or jump started half the cars in our street, rescued a blind dog trapped in a flood whilst that neighbour was in hospital, opened doors for neighbours that have locked themselves out, and alerted police to burglaries....noooo my home is the druggie house from yonks ago, always will be. Her porch and pergola are elevated too and she looks straight onto their backyard/ deck and sunroom. This b**** has more front than Myer and tells them off constantly for renovating. It turns out the husband used to be the local Councillor and she constantly rings the council to get them to do something but of course they can't because everything is above board. Horrible neighbours can ruin your lifestyle. When my girlfriend finishes her reno, she is selling and moving away from this bossy b****. I had googled it before posting and they look very similar so thought about getting others opinions on the topic so thank you all. I guess reading back my posts I come across as a mental neighbor LOL and hubby worse for yelling at her. I didn't mean to come across this way and I'm sorry to all as I actually now realize that type of neighborly behavior is uncalled for. Looks like I may have to take a visit and try make a mends - Some may say killer her with kindness LOL j/k We are picking up some unreal 3m bamboo plants from GinGin on the weekend grow 6 to 10metres - Hopefully they grow high enough to block out everything (the owl).... Her place backs onto our side/back (no front door in our street) their property is much higher than ours, and their house located even higher, hence higher patio and then the bird thing even higher so the bird gets a prime view (i don't look over the fence as some once suggested) LOL I think she has made me paranoid with her staring, must admit the fence has worked we cant see her anymore....... But can she see us????? LOL *paranoid* Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 53Sep 10, 2010 4:01 pm RenoQueen2010 Seems like this was a good topic. We tried our best to stay sweet with everyone but in the end we were tipped over the edge by a similar thing. We lived in a court, one of the end houses installed a security camera out the front (which i understood at the time due to the troubles they were having.) However this all got messy when the house next door to them got a new tv, and everytime they clicked on channel 9 they somehow got the view from the camera on their tv! The view from the camera showed most of the street and our front yards. Creepy! When confronted they denied this, but we'd all seen the footage. Soooo glad we moved! Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 55Sep 10, 2010 4:37 pm Hi there RQ- I'm pleased to read you are feeling much better about things. I've actually found this thread quite an interesting read. How sad that so many people have experienced such troublesome neighbours. It makes my little story sound quite boring. Many MANY moons ago (when I was single/ no kids/ studying at uni) I lived in a block of flats. There was a guy who I found "creepy" who used to stop at my door and peer into my flat if he was walking past. He didn't live on the same level as me and there didn't seem to be an obvious reason why he would need to walk past my front door so frequently. The front door opened straight up into my main living area but depending on the time of day and light in the room you couldn't always see straight in. It meant that sometimes I could see him peering in through my security door but he couldn't always see me. On one occasion I was right near the front door (I was getting ready to go out and squatting on the floor packing things into a bag) At that time of the day he would have had a clear view into my living area but wouldn't have noticed me right at the door. I looked up to see him pressing his face up against my security screen door trying to get a better view. I was so pleased to be sitting near the door as I gave it a push from where I was squatting and it slammed in his face LOL! I also had a few other weird things happening Eg items of clothes going missing from the clothes line and I spotted a car circling my block of flats on a few occasions and it always seemed to occur shortly after I returned home from a walk. I lived alone and had no family or anything I could call on nearby and was beginning to feel unsafe so after that incident I started keeping my front door closed and locked AT ALL TIMES. He was probably just a sticky beak- but it wasn't pleasant feeling as though I was in "fish bowl" To let the natural light in and to get a view of outside I ended up positioning my desk on the other side of the room and would open the curtains on the large window on the other side of the building. Unfortunately this meant that for the people in the flat behind and down one level I had a clear view straight into their unit if they left the front door open. There were many times I would be working at my desk and look out the window and would make eye contact with the people in the unit behind. It began to concern me that THEY thought I was 'spying' on them. I was simply trying to avoid 'my stalker' and it made me look like I was sticky beaking on them. Thank goodness I didn't have to live there for very long. Re: neighbors security camera vs our property? 56Sep 10, 2010 5:18 pm Ed, if there is such a thing as manlove, I feel it for you now after reading your witty comments (that seemed to just fly right over the heads of some). I was in stitches reading them. Chippy I agree, ACA would be all over this sort of thing. Some lady stands by her fence looking at her garden or is wondering what sort of mural to put on her fence and their neighbours start running around the house screaming that they SPY IS WATCHING US lol.
