Would it be rude to email him and send me money to purchase the shortfall?
Yes. But that hasn't stopped you in the past.

You mix the acid 1 part to 4 parts water, then scrub it with a deck scrub brush and hose off. You'll be glad you did. I would recommend Sikkens for your coating. Thanks for the tip, looks like I'm out shopping at lunchtime.... I am going to use Cabot's deck oil on it. Cos I have 1/4 of a tin leftover http://www.cabots.com.au/exterior/deck_deckingoil.asp I used it on top of my old sleeper wall, colour stayed nice forever and got full weather...... Re: Not quite a deck, bit more than steps 24Nov 12, 2007 5:47 pm Cabot's Decking Oil is a fairly 'cheap' product. You would expect 3-6 months from it on an uncovered deck before recoating would be neccesary. I have used it previously, I learnt the 'short-term saving - long term loss' lesson the hard way Re: Not quite a deck, bit more than steps 25Nov 13, 2007 7:48 am Dukekamaya Cabot's Decking Oil is a fairly 'cheap' product. You would expect 3-6 months from it on an uncovered deck before recoating would be neccesary. I have used it previously, I learnt the 'short-term saving - long term loss' lesson the hard way Hmmmmm..... As I said, I used it on the top of a redgum sleeper wall/seat and it had full weather and lasted really well. *shrugs* Oh well, will oil it up tonight and time will tell. No point letting what I have go to waste. Plus the crocodiles won't like me if I tip it down the drain. Oxalic Acid can be purchased from Bunnings in 1 litre containers, oddly enough the label is Oxalic Acid !!! Seemed to do a reasonable job cleaning, although there are a few small bits of board that are weathered and the colour hasn't come back as the container claimed. But then again, I didn't really expect it too. I'll call those bits character blemishes Re: Not quite a deck, bit more than steps 26Nov 13, 2007 11:36 am You can use it a bit stronger for those really grey areas. The problem with using a traditional decking oil is if you want to use a better product later i.e. a water-based finish or a turp-based finish - the residue oil in the deck will cause poor adhesion Re: Not quite a deck, bit more than steps 27Nov 16, 2007 7:43 am I was going to make a new thread, titled "Get a load of my big oily d*ck" but figured it may get censored so.......
Washed the grey areas again, left the oxalic acid on for longer. Didn't make much difference. a little more colour came through. Oh well....stiff...it's a step. And you can't see the difference now that some deck oil is on. http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff126/Alan_Gill_house/th_deck12.jpg http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff126/Alan_Gill_house/th_deck13.jpg http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff126/Alan_Gill_house/th_deck14.jpg My attempt at an artsy night photo. Well done bet the wife loves it! Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Re: Not quite a deck, bit more than steps 33Nov 16, 2007 6:27 pm Al Washed the grey areas again, left the oxalic acid on for longer. Didn't make much difference. a little more colour came through. I had a look at Bunnings at the different cleaners - you have to look at the fineprint that states the actual concentration of oxalic acid. Three types - Cabots, Feast Watson and Intergrain ( all one company) for approx. $10,$15 & $20 respectively had vary amounts. The Intergrain 'Reviva' had 9 times the oxalic acid as Cabots 'Deck Clean'. Its very important Al that you didn't let any of it dry on te timber and is best to use a gerni to clean off.
