Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 12, 2010 12:36 pm Just wondering if anyone can help me out, I have just found out that the person who owns the block of land next door to me lives in China. I want to organise the fence between our blocks and so I need to get into contact with my neighbour in China about paying for half the fence. We are due to move in some time around October and so I want to start the ball rolling. I have been given the details of the owner of the block from the council and have passed the details on to the company who will install the fence, however, neither the council or fencing company can do anything to help me get in contact with my neighbour. I have also contacted the Chinese Embassy to see if there is something they can do but they are no help either. My first thought was to just simply write them a letter, after all I do have their name and address, the problem is, what if they don’t understand or can’t read English? Then I had the thought of getting someone to translate a letter for me into Chinese and then get them to translate back to English if they respond. I don’t know if this is a good idea or not. If anyone has any thoughts on what I might be able to do I would very much appreciate your input. I assume they must have some command of the language if they have purchased land here (I doubt the contracts etc for the purchase would have been translated). If they can't understand it I'm sure they can get someone in China to translate your letter for them. I'm assuming the address you have is in China? Make sure you send it via registered post or something which you can use later (if necessary) to prove they have received it. Wait for a few weeks (maybe a month?) to see if you get a response. If so good, if not then you might have to start taking action pursuant to the Fences Act http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/ ... /fa196867/. If possible I'd make your initial letter a "notice to fence" (under section 6) so you don't have to write another letter later. Also section 9 may apply in your case if you have no luck with the initial letter.
