Depends where you are and whether they've changed the rules lately. Apparently I needed builders insurance and I need to warrant the work for 7 years. Best to check with your local council on what they require.

You only need the insurance if the job is over $12000 in labour and materials. If the builder is doing everything you don't have to do anything, if you are doing some work be it even 'project managing' the job - you will need an O/B licence and you will then hire the builder as a subbie.
