Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 31, 2010 6:51 pm Hi, We recently bought an old house and have stripped off the vinyl floors. Underneath are old solid hardwood floors which we are going to sand and stain. I really like dark chocolate brown. Below are some inspiration images of the colour I want. Also how many coats do you think is needed? And what brand? Do you think it is high maintenance (dark wood flooring)? Can you please tell me if I should go with oil or water based? P/s: Getting it done professionally is out of the question because we are under a tight budget. This is the colour of the floor now. The wood is Tasmanian Oak. To make it more brown rather than black you can mix it with walnut stain. I would definitely go & speak to someone in the paint store for expert advice before attempting this. As far as maintenance, it definitely helps if you go for a matt finish rather than gloss. We had very old dark jarrrah floors in a house and it showed up all dust etc very quickly. I would think a floor this dark will probably need to be cleaned often. But it does look good! Re: Floor stain advice 3Jul 31, 2010 8:34 pm We are doing the same dark stain from tas oak floors and our guy is usuing a combination of walnut and black to achieve the colour we showed him. He is also "popping "the floor first to increase absorbtion - he said they will run a damp mop over floor to open wood to absorb stain we are doing ours next week so can give you more info then Good luck! ************* First time renovator VIC Re: Floor stain advice 4Aug 04, 2010 6:33 pm Upon sanding back our floorboards 10 yrs ago we discovered massive animal urine stains from the past owner' s pets!! Yuck! I was devastated, however our sander suggested staining them first with Walnut colour (almost as dark as your pics), then light sand and clear coats. The result was fantastic and has really been a feature! The floors are just about due to be redone and we plan to restain walnut again. Re: Floor stain advice 5Aug 05, 2010 5:23 am Water based stain looks fantastic i reakon.Solid coloring. The water based stuff will wear off once the clear coat gets thin though, but for flooring you need a serious penetrating stain . You don't want it thick and sitting to much on the wood surface so when the clear coat is thinned over time you wont loose the stain shading. Oil based with a penetration fluid- 1 coat \I would look for a color so you can add the penetration fluid and do 1 consistent coat. Then clear coat/s , satin is nice. This way you can possible never stain again but just light sand and add more clear coat. This is my opinion after painting for numerous years and also doing a lot of stain work(business). Re: Floor stain advice 7Aug 15, 2010 9:07 pm We had Jason from MyFlooring (link above) do ours dark brown and I think he used walnut and black, although ours were slightly lighter than your pictures. Frankly, I wouldn't do it again. I understand why you want the look - I love it too - but it shows every bit of dust and muck on the floor. I think your floors look beautiful just the way they are. Ours were a horrible red colour, so we didn't have much to lose, but you do, I reckon. We will be going for lighter coloured floors in our next house. (P.S. Everyone warned me about the maintenance and I ignored them!) Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom. I want to remove stains and gloss seal.
