Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 20, 2010 7:51 pm Hi guys, First of all, I'd like to apologize for the possible spelling mistakes, english is not my native language. So, I am currently building a house in Wanneroo and I'm going to need a retaining wall on the side of my block. This retaining wall will be made of limestone blocks (1000 mm x 350mm x 350mm) on which my fence will go. I have to draw the plans of this wall for shire approval and I am having some trouble working out the exact structure of the wall (I've had various quotes that mention different requirements). Basically, the ground level on my block is 700mm higher than the road level. I want a 3 course (visible) wall, so 1 meter high but only retaining 700mm. I have been told I would need one limestone block underneath the 3 above ground and possibly one backing block. So basically, 5 limestone blocks for every meter of wall. This seems a bit too much to me, but as I don't have any experience/knowledge in construction, I was hoping one of you guys would be able to give me a definite answer. Thanks in advance for your help and time Sub Re: Your opinion - retaining wall 2Jul 21, 2010 11:06 pm Hi guys, Went to the council today to get their opinion and unfortunately they just process the application and give go ahead providing that it's been certified by an engineer... So unless I pay an engineer $350 to draw this plans (and I'm pretty sure I can draw them), I won't know what the best structure would be for this wall... Would be great if I could have someone's opinion Jo Re: Your opinion - retaining wall 3Jul 27, 2010 12:24 pm Hi Jo. My opinion is that you need to hire the engineer to draw this for you. It's not just the "image" of how the wall will look when constructed that goes on these, but instructions for footings, piers, measuremants to and from other structures, etc. You may have a lot of trouble getting an engineer to sign off on your own drawn plans. It's not worth the hassled to me. Thanks in advance for your help and time Sub You take photos. You create a portfolio of ideas and images. Do your own plans using the knowledge you already have plus keep finding new info. Ring Qualified people and ask them what they can offer you. Find a happy medium between your time spent designing and the correct protocols that the Engineer must show on the plans. Re: Your opinion - retaining wall 6Jul 28, 2010 11:29 pm Hi guys, Thanks for the replies and comments Thanks to ed @ EcoClassic as well; I just know that my English isn't perfect yet and I hate when someone can't write properly in my language on a forum like this, so I would imagine that you guys are the same. If I apologize in advance, you're less likely to have a go at me In regards to the retaining wall, I think I've found one or two builders that are trustworthy, and according to them I can stick to half a block as backing and half a block as footing. Now I just need to find someone who's willing to cut full blocks in half blocks to save some bucks (the price difference between full and half blocks is almost nonexistent). Anyway, I'll let you know what happens so if someone is in the same situation and reads this post, there will be an answer (although, just don't pick Homebuyers Centre to build your house and you won't have any nasty surprise). Jo Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5195 Thanks for the suggestion. The space between shower and sinks was too tight. I agree about the toilet location. So I have tried two other options: The lower one is… 3 6142 these look like missing batts. Go up and take a look. But yeah moisure meter is a completely different tool 4 9460 |
