Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 04, 2010 5:59 pm I've read quite a few posts that say Colorbond gutters were replaced before handover as they were scratched. Was hoping to hear from some of you who had this done. Where were they scratched, how long, wide, deep were the scratches? I'm curious as the Colorbond website recommends small scratches be left alone, and should not be touched up. Our builder is reluctant to replace the gutters.
Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 3Aug 05, 2010 5:57 am If the scratch is to the metal, i would use a colorbond solargaurd from wattle or dulux. The dulux guard stuff is some serious paint. I have been a subby for the big companies for years , and as a painter i would possibly be the last person to visit and touch up anything in a home before the owners take the key.I can tell you that there was many scratched colorbond gutters/downpipes , that were not replaced before the owner gets the key.If the metal was damaged and the owner complains i think it was always replaced before the owner gets the key. with regards to supervisors and smaller builders, the guttering may have been replaced after handover. Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 4Aug 05, 2010 9:12 am If you going to touch up use a smalll brush and only paint over the scratch. As the colorbond and paint will fade at different rates and for this reason it will look worse then the orginally issue. Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 5Aug 05, 2010 10:10 am I just heard back from Bluescope Steel (Colorbond). They confirmed that scratches <2mm in width are considered minor and do not need to be touched up. http://www.colorbond.com/files/TB-2.pdf Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 6Aug 05, 2010 11:58 am We have many scratches from ladders on our gutters. We have been told they will be replaced as there are quite a few. Any small ones (a couple on downpipes) will be touched up. Basically was told if the metal affected it will be replaced. Some scratches can be sealed and painted. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 7Aug 05, 2010 12:05 pm I also have scratches on my Colorbond gutters and fascia as they were left on the footpath for two days prior to installation due to lack of space onsite! When I raised this with my builder I was told they would be touched up at the end of construction which is something I am unhappy about as I have paid for new gutters and fascia- not a touch up job! I called Blue Scope Steel and spoke with an employee in their technical department who advised the manufacturer’s recommendation is to replace scratched panels as touch up paint ages differently to the finished Colorbond product (thus making the damaged are even more noticeable in the long run). He was kind enough to give me his details should his confirmation be required further down the track if my builder insists otherwise! Personally I would never settle for damaged goods. Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 8Aug 05, 2010 2:39 pm Trinity I just heard back from Bluescope Steel (Colorbond). They confirmed that scratches <2mm in width are considered minor and do not need to be touched up. http://www.colorbond.com/files/TB-2.pdf This is inconsistent to what i know to be true regarding scratches that are 1or 2 mm thick,if the scratch has exposed metal then the scratch rusts and will always be seen, even 3 weeks after installation. It is true however that you cant really paint a section of guttering with paint .It will look different. On the other hand people has payed for colorbond guttering and zinc down pipes(i dont know why), but the downpipes would need to be painted. Some colors dont blend well between colorbond and paint but some colors just blend straight in. You can however touch up exposed metal, i think it looks better than a rusty scratch. I have been asked to touch up many scratches before the owner sees them.In most cases i would have to paint the downpipe boots the same color as the colorbond, downpipe straps that have been abused etc.It always looks better than rust. I think though that the colorbond guide is correct when there is a scuff scratch that has not left exposed metal. Re: scratched Colorbond gutters 9Aug 05, 2010 2:43 pm Guttering along the front of our garage was replaced as it was scratched- scratches were about 5-10cm long. They didn't even question it. We just pointed and said, 'that looks terrible' and it was replaced. If your builder says your scratches aren't significant enough to be able to replace the bits you're not happy with, well I know what I would do.... Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10715 Hi all, Our boundary perimeter fences need replacing (3 sides). From everyone's experience, what would you install? Timber lapped and capped OR colorbond? Thank you. 0 3332 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 21177 |
