Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Dog proofing my yard 14Jul 14, 2010 4:51 pm sweetime what about a giant chain that's large enough to let the dog run around the yard, but not to get out of it? Personal opinion is that it's extremely cruel to have a dog tethered. Not to mention I have a family friend who's dog accidentally hung itself because it was tied up. R.I.P Gonzo Re: Dog proofing my yard 15Jul 14, 2010 4:55 pm i'm not talking about only a tiny chain, i'm talking about one that's big enough for it to reach everywhere it would otherwise have been able to run to in the backyard. but if strangulation is a worry, then by all means, stay away! Re: Dog proofing my yard 16Jul 14, 2010 5:10 pm suh prov1xno1 if it was me, id just get rid of the dog... I find this rather insensitive and think it would have been better left unsaid Agreed. I really can't give you any advice, but perhaps the RSPCA or lost dogs home may have a solution? Or can provide tips on how to secure your yard, as they would see masses of lost pooches who have escaped and taken themselves on an adventure. Good luck with your furbabies, they sound like naughty little buggers bless them Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Good luck with your furbabies, they sound like naughty little buggers bless them I'm thinking Trinia's idea is fantastic. Will definitely try doing that on the weekend. I might try something a bit sturdier than chicken wire though considering how easy the little one busted it apart. Maybe a bit of welded wire.... *cringe* Going to be expensive!!! R.I.P Gonzo /quote] There is no way you can tether a Foxy those dogs will drag themselves and choke to get where they want....we tried it but we kept an eye on him for a while and it could have been disaster. There are so many things chains can get wrapped around awful thought. Re: Dog proofing my yard 19Jul 14, 2010 7:33 pm We had the same problem with our mini foxies, yes we had two, DH and I both had one each when we met. We did the chicken wire thing and then put garden beds around the fences. Something for them to do is also a good idea, kong toys or during summer, treats frozen in big blocks, like an ice-cream container that take a while to defrost, something they can chew on etc, also helps. We also had both dogs desexed, this also helps stop the inclination to escape the yard, oh and don't forget a daily walk. Hope this helps. Re: Dog proofing my yard 20Jul 14, 2010 7:43 pm We kept our two jack russells on a harness and lead for the first week. I hated it! (I'm sure they hated it too!). But we had to get them familar with the smaller space first so we had time to build a secure run. They dont have access to the whole yard yet, as our new neighbours have a large dog, and there's an empty block behind us, we dont want them to get out under the fence. We have a timber paling fence, and have built in a dog run along the side of our house. It's 2m wide all the way down, and 15m long. One side is the house, so that's 100% secure, the other side is our boundary fence. We've built up crushed rock about 150mm, and have bought extra plinth boards/base boards and have done what you've mentioned above. Our other neighbours are still building, so we've had access to their yard (shhhh) and have put stakes in to stop the crushed rock pushing the extra plinth board/base board over into their block. One end of the run has a wire fence, and the other a gate. I'll try and post pics tomorrow.
