Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 05, 2010 4:56 pm Hi All, I'm chasing floor to ceiling bookshelves (which will also ideally cover an entire wall) in solid timber (so no ikea or laminated). Does anyone know of any good (and preferably cheap!) places to get them? I'm in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne, and would prefer not to travel too much (otherwise I'd go visit my uncle's furniture shop in Thomastown -it may yet come to that!) Thanks for any suggestions Re: Floor to Ceiling Bookshelves - where to purchase? 2Jul 05, 2010 6:20 pm solid timber and 'cheap' don't generally go hand in hand unless your talking pine. Sounds like what you are after would be better built in-situ Re: Floor to Ceiling Bookshelves - where to purchase? 3Jul 06, 2010 8:55 am Yeah, pine is what my parents had (though stained) and I'm ok with that. I just don't want laminated stuff, as it needs to actually *look* like timber to go with the rest of the decor. I know they're able to be purchased (my Uncle sells them, I just don't want to drive to Thomastown), so I was wondering whether anyone knew of any places down in the south-east? Re: Floor to Ceiling Bookshelves - where to purchase? 6Jul 20, 2010 12:46 pm Lots of Australian furniture manufacturers will make to measure, but may not be as cheap as you want. We have an older home, lots of timber furniture etc. I have a weird space that I want bookshelves floor to ceiling so plan on getting a cabinet maker to do them. I will probably get them in particle board / craftwood so cheaper and then paint it. Porter's Paints have great paints eg milk paint, which give an 'old' look, and can make it blend in with wood furniture Re: Floor to Ceiling Bookshelves - where to purchase? 7Jul 20, 2010 12:55 pm Floor to ceiling is a little subjective these days, with the common new houses coming in at 2440mm(8ft), 2590mm(8.5ft), 2740mm(9ft) so how close it is will be determined by your ceiling heights. From what we've recently been looking at most tend to come in around the 2020mm or 2200mm mark still a reasonably way short of the ceiling. As tjilpi mentioned most pine furniture places will order customer sizes, but then their's the lead time and extra cost as the majority of them seem to be built to order from overseas anyway. Can't really go past a custom solution from a cabinet maker imo, if you want a a flush seemless look, but your probably looking at 2-3 times the cost in comparison to mass overseas manufactured.
