Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 30, 2010 10:06 am We have 2 hard wired smoke detectors which for some reason go off every now and again. We consistantly replace the batteries but this does not help. They will on occaisions beep twice then all is fine. This morning both alarms went off again for no apparent reason. They are approx. 9 years old. Can anyone help me unravel the mistery of the phantom detectors? Re: Smoke detector problems 2Jun 30, 2010 10:36 am Hold down the test button after you install the new batteries. this resets the alarm. Don't forget to do them all. Hard wired smoke alarms are usually also wired together so if one goes off, they all do. Some hard wired smoke detectors have fuses. If these burn out, the unit will beep. If the fuse looks good, it may be that it needs a good clean. if you can get your hands on an air compressor to clean it with, that would be ideal, if not, a vacuum cleaner or your lungs might do the trick. They are the three most common issues. Other issues could be temperature. they dont like heat. They only have a 10 year warranty so one of them might be faulty If nothing i've mentioned works you will need to consult a sparky. Electricians can test your wiring and offer more advice.
