Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 27, 2010 8:36 pm I have a general question about rendering. I have an old WW1 cottage that has the original lime -plastered internal brick walls. Back then they didn't use cement (not quite sure of the reason,? cost or availability), but the walls are cracking and crumbling away. A builder recently told me not to have them cement rendered as the cement would not be good for the bricks and eat them away. Is this true or false...and what are the reasons?...no-one ever said this to me before. He recommended chipping off the old sand and lime render and then reline with gyprock? confused. Re: to cement render or gyprock? 4Jun 30, 2010 2:16 pm I have this dilemma as well for a recent reno and the builder has told me that gyprock is better, esp if there are areas of old and new bricks next to each other as there will certainly be cracks. I've googled this and it seems that gyprock is recommended if you want a modern look to the house. Re: to cement render or gyprock? 5Jul 01, 2010 11:01 am Hi SYD, I am struggling a bit with choices. Of course cost is a factor as well...not sure how much for render but either way the old plaster has to be chipped off...this is a huge mess...render will be messy as well. If I get gyprock then it will have to be on battens. I think I prefer the solidity of render and if it's a good job it will look as smooth as gyprock...which can have a 'drummy' sound. I'm not sure which way to go. Re: to cement render or gyprock? 6Jul 01, 2010 12:56 pm Also, if you put the gyprock on battens you loose about 50 mm along each dimension of a room. Not much, but it all adds up. You could loose about 3% of your floorspace. I'm not sure which way to go. I was told by mu builder that gyprock will cost more but they will give me the same price as render. From my research, if it's a small area, then gyprock is cheaper but otherwise gyprock may be the same price or more expensive than render. I was told that it is easier to patch up chips and scratches with gyprock than render. I feel that if I went with render and am not happy with result then builder will say "told you so" whereas he assures me I'll be happy with gyprock. Re: to cement render or gyprock? 9Jul 02, 2010 8:36 pm If I had to go gyrock, then direct stick would be better than battens. However, I'm still a fan of render and that is what I'm getting.
