How strong is a fence supposed to be? 21Oct 20, 2007 6:08 pm Where we are renting at the moment is in a fairly unprotected area (still being built) and when it's really windy, the fence wobbles. It's colourbond and concreted in(?) but the whole length of fence does like a wave as the wind hits it. It doesn't surprise me that wind would be able to do that if the posts weren't particularly strong. Are you able to get different posts? Excuse ignorance, but are there something like red gum posts that would be stronger?
Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Arrgghh!! How strong is a fence supposed to be? 22Oct 20, 2007 7:11 pm ![]() Have you considered the possiblity of some young punks coming along and breaking the fence?? or maybe a truck backing into it!!?? ![]() it does seem that this is a more likely reason than wind. Or maybe its just me thinking badly of the human race out there... ![]() Yes to the truck thing but evidence doesn't seem to support that initial thought. ![]() Excuse ignorance, but are there something like red gum posts that would be stronger? Ray. I think some other companies use other types of wood as posts. To update everyone on the situation: Boss man of the fencing company was at our house this morning. They are going to fix the fence from monday onwards. Wood will be delivered and the original contractor will erect a new fence along the entire boundary line. They will also be putting up some bracing to help support the fence on both sides while we are neighbour-less on that side. It seems that the wind was the culprit as boss man has said he dropped by our house yesterday to investigate the fence. While there he said he spoke to the guys working down the road who are doing the earthworks for the next stage of the estate. These guys said it was so windy that their trucks were getting blown and swaying that they had to stop work that day. All that matters to me at this point in time is that they are going to fix it. At no cost to me. And removing the rubbish when they are done. ![]() ![]() [sneakersss] Re: Arrgghh!! At least for the time being. ![]() The bracing they added to make the fence stronger was simply just some bits of wood nailed to both sides of the post. We thougth that this looked okay until the super strong winds arrived again today and you could see the fence still slightly shaking. We (mostly I) started worrying that it was going to fall again so we added some extra support using some bits of extra wood they left behind. And it definitely made a difference. Looks straighter.... ![]() Did they replace the broken post or just put those support posts on either side? Re: Arrgghh!! How strong is a fence supposed to be? 26Oct 29, 2007 8:18 am Thats one of the problems with a 'lap'n'cap' treated pine fence - it doesn't allow the wind through the pailings. Cracks in the posts is normal and to be expected - the posts are non-structual grade pine and are not kiln-dried so will 'open' up as they dry out. Re: Arrgghh!! Then they reused the panels to fit in between the new posts. [sneakersss] Re: Arrgghh!!
