I am currently looking at a house but the only turn off is the old picture rails which i have learnt from this forum are a pain to remove without damaging the plaster so my question is has anyone removed any off this plaster altogether? Does it remove easy with a jimmy bar? I am going to have at least 3 bedrooms and a lounge rooms worth Re: Has anyone.....? 2Jun 16, 2010 10:08 pm we bought an old edwardian, 1 room of which had walls in a sorry condition - maybe caused by fire?? anyhoo, rather than rip down the old lime plaster, we attached - racking my brain here - furring strips ? directly to the brick walls & then attached plasterboard(gyprock) to them. VOILA!! new walls Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Has anyone.....? 4Jun 16, 2010 10:26 pm IMO, you have 2 options : 1. do what we did without having to rip any original plaster down - faster. or 2. rip down the original plaster & then do what we did - slower. U can use wood if u want maybe a bit of 70mm x 35mm and rip it down the middle. Not sure what option is cheaper but prob the metal furring strips. I'm not sure exactly how it has been done but the only reason I can notice it is because they didn't bother removing the skirtings. So now the skirting boards are almost flush with the wall and the door frames don't stick out as much. I don't think any furrings have been used as otherwise the plasterboard would be sticking even further out from the wall. For 2 - I'm not exactly sure how the plaster did this but he fixed it directly over the old walls. For 3 - We battoned one wall (with wood). We have an old brick wall behind the old plaster, so took down the old plaster, put up battons across the brick and studs and then the new plaster had something to fasten to. (like southies pic) 4 - the plasterer used these. I think he mainly used these on the ceiling i think. I also put new plaster over the old plaster on the ceiling. My rooms aren't big so it was ok. I have heard that if you have big rooms that this isn't a good idea because the weight of the ceiling starts getting really heavy. I was thinking you could - baton so the new plaster will clear the picture rail. then you don't have to pull out anything, but you have to put up batons and you will loose a little area of your room - Pull out the picture rails and some of the plaster (not all of it), you could use the reciprocating saw to cut out a section and then plaster over the top. Then i don't think you would need to baton.
