Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 15, 2010 8:42 pm hello everyone! Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on accessing WIR through an ensuite.. any pros and cons with this? One concern I have is water vapour going into the WIR of course... will be interested to hear from people who have to access WIR through their ensuite too. =) Our home together "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain." Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 2Jun 15, 2010 8:48 pm I'm not a fan for the reason you give as well. I know someone with that set up and she complains about a mildew smell on her clothing, but she also complains that her bathroom fan is ineffective too. She has also said that she doesn't like it when they have visitors and someone needs to use the loo and goes through the wardrobe first. Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 3Jun 15, 2010 9:22 pm One of the reasons I specifically chose the floorplan I did was because the WIR was totally separate from the ensuite, and hidden away in a 'dead end' behind a wall the head of the bed is on. Although I have a fan directly above the shower, it still worried me with the steam issue...and tripping over shoes to get to the loo in the middle of the night! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... We have separate WIRs so I don't even have to see the disgraceful mess. I don't think steam should be an issue if your ventilation works properly. Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 5Jun 16, 2010 8:13 am The general mess that is a wardrobe - different colours, different lengths, different fabrics all mixed together would probably drive me crazy if I had to walk through it every day just to have a shower. Although I have seen that layout done quite well as a passage way to the ensuite with wardrobe doors on either side - it's not quite a walk in robe... more like a walk through wardrobe... Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 6Jun 16, 2010 8:41 am I would just steer clear of it. For all the reasons posted above. Steam and access. Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 7Jun 16, 2010 9:14 am Hi AnD Strangely, I have never given it a thought until I read other points of view We walk through our WIR (like a little passage way) to get to the ensuite but I have never noticed any steam etc coming through and ruining the clothes. Our shower not only has a fan but it also has its own window which I keep open all the time. So works well for us but the shower is in its own little room away from the WIR so I suppose thats why I have never given it a thought....I dont think this post makes any sense at all Mrs B Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 8Jun 16, 2010 9:32 am We have to walk through the robe to the ensuite and I love it. Check out the first page of my thread for our floorplan (link in my signature). I have never had a problem with steam, dampness or musty smells. The best bit is if someone has to get up early, there are a few more doors between the bedroom and ensuite so the person still sleeping is not as disturbed by bathroom noises. Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 9Jun 16, 2010 9:46 am Isnt' the OP about walking through the ensuite to get to the robe? I wouldn't like it - not just because of the steam/mildew issue but I wouldn't want to walk through bathroom smells to get to my clothes or shoes or whatever. You sure set the scene with that comment. I wondered if it made any difference if you walk through the robe to the ensuite or walk through the ensuite to the robe. Now I know!! I'd rather walk through the robe!!!! Let's hope the toilet is separate! Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 11Jun 16, 2010 11:28 am I have my WIR off the side of my ensuite and I love it. Never noticed any mildew or damp smells in the WIR and we have carpet in it as well. It has a door which I close when other people will be using the bathroom even though the WIR is kept neat at all times. We have a great exhaust fan in our ensuite. 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! Now we have to walk in from ensuite to the back to get to the WIR (NOW KNOW ONE CAN SEE THE MESS IN THERE LOL) ... we have a door for steam and dampness problem hopefully it wont be a problem for us.. I LOVE OUR ENSUITE/WIR PLAN!!!!! Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 14Jun 16, 2010 12:46 pm kb46 Isnt' the OP about walking through the ensuite to get to the robe? thats how i read the question too, but everyone seems to be answering the opposite question! fairy blue our set up is the same as yours and i love it for the same reasons. we also have a door from WIR to ensuite whcih is always closed when the shower is being used so I don't see how there would be steam issues. as for walking thru a messy WIR to get to ensuite, ours is big enough so that all mess is left on either side of the walk thru bit so that can be kept clear for middle of the night stumbles to the loo! Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 15Jun 16, 2010 1:25 pm Wow! Thanks heaps for the response. Loving this forum as we could bounce things off. Yes what I meant is to access wir through ensuite. One suggestion for our plan, is to go into ensuite, and wir is in the right. They will be seperated by sliding doors. Becaus there is a door, and it is sort of like an offshoot room next to th ensuite, I am not sure if there r other issues that may go along with it. I am also off to check out a few plans as suggested! Sorry, using phone to type this so a bit difficult to look at links at the moment. Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 16Jun 16, 2010 3:05 pm Just a bit of a tangent: Toilets in the middle ages: In castles the toilet was called a garderobe and it was simply a vertical shaft with a stone seat at the top. Some garderobes emptied into the moat. People hung their robes in the garderobe because they believed the smell would ward off moths. In time the word garderobe changed to wardrobe. So if you want to keep the moths away... Cheers, Earl Re: Accessing WIR through ensuite 17Jun 16, 2010 3:20 pm I don't mind ensuites after the robe, but really don't like it the other way around, more so because I'd have to walk over cold tiles in winter to get to my warm clothes.
