Never noticed any mildew or damp smells in the WIR and we have carpet in it as well. It has a door which I close when other people will be using the bathroom even though the WIR is kept neat at all times. We have a great exhaust fan in our ensuite. CiNny! Ours is pretty similar to yours! That's what I meant- going into the ensuite, and the WIR is on the right hand side. When you say great enhaust fan, how strong should it be?
