Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 10, 2010 8:38 pm I posted my plans in another thread and it was mentioned my family room size and furniture fitting in there with all the doors and windows. So here are my plans http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j132/MEV09/untitled.jpg The type of windows/doors have yet to be decided so anything is possible but that is where the room is. I don't want the room to be crammed. Ideally we would like to put a decent size corner suite in there. Initially we had the family 5x5 which made the dining room way too big unless we stepped the wall back in for the dining room but I don't know if we are keen on that idea Hope I am making sense! Re: Need help with family room size 2Jun 11, 2010 8:38 am The size is probably not an issue. Our open plan family area (kitchen, living, dining) is 60 square meters which is about as small as you would go I think. Yours seems a bit bigger. What I would think about is design. To me, the current design turns your kitchen into a bit of a hallway and an obstacle to that indoor/outdoor flow. Also think about window placement in the living area. If all teh walls are filled with windows, furniture placement can be difficult. Re: Need help with family room size 3Jun 11, 2010 9:08 am Mrs P Initially we had the family 5x5 which made the dining room way too big unless we stepped the wall back in for the dining room but I don't know if we are keen on that idea I don't see a problem with a bigger dining room - you'd have room for a buffet along the end wall, or built-in shelving/cabinets. Our family room is only 3.5m wide (although it's 6m long), but I resisted the urge to add extra windows purely so that we wouldn't run into problems with furniture placement. Outdoor access is through the adjoining dining area, so that wasn't an issue. So we've ended up with one end open to the kitchen/dining, and a wide window in the opposite wall, which is set high enough from floor level that we can fit a couch under it, no dramas at all. That lets us arrange seating in an L-shape and have the TV on the remaining wall. I have a pic somewhere, unfurnished though...I'll see if I can find it. I think your room size is OK, but you might have to rethink window placement or sizing/height above floor level. Re: Need help with family room size 4Jun 11, 2010 9:40 am Hi Mrs P, I think I might have prompted this thread so thought I better contribute some ideas!! Not knowing what aspect your block has and what you intend for it may make my suggestion irrelevant but at least it is food for thought. I am going to presume that you might be looking at putting the tv in the corner near the patio because if you put it on the wall opposite the sliding door to the patio then you would in all probability need the seating opposite which would be backing onto the sliding door which would block that access. So, going back to the corner option would have you being able to put a corner sofa on the wall opposite the patio area and coming around to back onto the dining area. You would then need to address the 2 windows opposite the patio area. If you couldn't do away with them you could look at having high feature windows so it didn't interfere with the seating underneath. You could also have 2 narrow windows on the end wall with the tv in the middle which would mean being able to see the tv if you are sitting at the dining table (an important requirement for me!). You could also move the window that is currently at the end of the dining area to the side wall which would help with natural light in the family area if you decided to do away with the 2 windows on the side. Where it is currently looks out onto the area where the laundry and toilet windows/doors are so not sure what type of aspect you intend for this courtyard type area. ie. clothesline?? etc.. If you did move the window to the side you could then run floor to ceiling cupboards across this back wall as an extension of the kitchen. Some of them could be glass doors to display any relevant items you may have or solid doors as just more storage for any kitchen items. Have a think about how the house fits in with anything like slope, views, existing trees etc. and what intended shedding, parking etc. all fits on the block and this might help you decide where the windows, doors etc. need to be and then try and visualise your intended furniture requirements and make sure it all ties in together. Don't forget to take into account what type of window dressings you intend as this can also come into play as well. Good luck!!
