We have to get creative with dragging the hose through 'feature openings' in our walls to make it work. Except for that 9m is fine. Until this house, I had never used a ducted vacuum hose before and it hasn't caused me any grief at all. Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 5Jun 09, 2010 8:17 pm hiccup For those with ducted vacuum cleaners. How long is your hose? 6m or 9m? Is the 9m difficult to manouver? Would you recommend a shorter hose with more outlet points or a longer hose with less outlet points? 9M is standard and I wouldn't recommend going past 12M So plan to 9M keeping in mind you want to be able to reach the cornices not just the floor area. You can either buy a new 12M hose and use the older one for the garage (if you have the unit in the garage for dedicated car cleaning) or you can get an extension which you can permanently have connected or arranged it so that you pop the extension on only when you need to. Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 8Jun 11, 2010 9:44 am To be honest I had second thoughts about a ducted vacuum cleaner. At one stage I was considering getting 2 Dysons (one to keep downstairs and one for upstairs). It would work out cheaper and be hassle free. However have changed my mind again and decided to go with ducted.... ahhh... Hope I don't regret it Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 9Jun 11, 2010 9:59 am Hi Folks, When and if our build ever gets going, we'll be going with a ducted system called Hide-a-Hose. It's exactly the same as a standard ducted vac but the hose is in a sleeve stored in the wall. You pull out the hose from the wall socket, instead of attaching one and when you're finished, you put your hand over the outlet and it's own suction pulls it back into the wall, kind of like a retracting power cord. So all you have to put away is the wand and head rather than the whole hose. Anybody seen these? We saw it at a home centre somewhere and fell in love with it. So do you have a super long hose or a hose in each outlet point? Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 11Jun 11, 2010 10:12 am The most important thing is that the ducting is kept simple with very few bends and restrictions. So if this means having minimal ducting and a longer hose, that's the way to go. Better having a longer hose than extra length in ducting. Careful planning of the system is important for good performance.

They can be 9 or 12 metres. So we're setting two up downstairs at almost opposite ends of the house. One is right in front of the stairs so you can do the stairs from that one and just 1 upstairs should do the lot. Sure it would be more convenient but the initial cost Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 14Jun 11, 2010 10:44 am Eskay40 So we're setting two up downstairs at almost opposite ends of the house. Hmmm, its hard to say without knowing your floorplan (I'm not asking) but think about it..... having a duct at each end of the house would require l-o-n-g ducts from the central vac unit extending to the outlets at each end of the house. Then a hose is connected which must reach back to the central areas. Or if the vac is fitted at one end of the house, it would take much longer ducts to the other end. For best performance, the total combined length of ducts and hose must be kept to a minimum. And elbows affect airflow dramatically, so fewer is better. Again, design and positioning of the vac and outlets is critical for good performance. Golden rule: More complex system = more $$$ = less performance. Ash. Sure it would be more convenient but the initial cost [/quote] We charge $1k per point, you need approx 15 metres of straight duct work to install (from memory) the extra large non standard pipework. Then there is the machine on top of that. Personally I'd stick with a regular system and spend the extra money on a Vroom(s) or switchable hoses etc But everyone is different. Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 16Jun 11, 2010 6:08 pm Melrich We are just considering ducted vacuum. What do people who have it think? Is it better than a portable vacuum? How do you handle upstairs? A popular choice is to have a second hose kit upstairs - cost would be around $120 for a full kit or $80 for just an additional regular hose. Re: How long is your ducted vaccum cleaner hose? 17Jun 12, 2010 12:01 am Hi Folks, It really is a personal thing. I can't imagine having a 9 or 12 metre hose coiled up somewhere that I carry to where I want and then coil it all back up again after I finished and carry it back to a caddy somewhere. I'm much happier with the idea of just grabbing the wand and connecting it up to the hose which is all in the wall space. I'm willing to pay for that extra convenience. For our place, the extra cost was about 40% on top of a standard unit, about $3.3K. I still don't think it's too expensive. We bought a "Kirby" many years ago. Works a treat but was bloody expensive and makes a helluva noise when it's running. Boy does it vac up the pet hair, though. The system I'm looking at is much larger capacity so I'm sure it will do what I want. There's a graph that shows the suction versus distance degradation and I'm comfortable that the one we've selected is going to be fine at the furthest point. The guy in Melbourne is very helpful and explained everything. I don't know if it can be installed afterwards, He'll know. PM me if you want his contact details in Vic. As I said, just about everything we do in our new houses is a personal choice and we all do the research on what we think we need/want - otherwise we wouldn't be on this site! I feel this is the right solution for us and just wanted to share it so that those reading could make up their own minds. Long winded and verbose?? sorry.
