According to my father the retired Electrical Inspector LOL. No, a long cable run, and the de-rating factor applied to it to calculate how much current it can carry after allowing for 'voltage drop', can be overcome by using a larger cable. Usually. kyton We are over 60m from the road and our home is 55sq - so we have 3 phase. DH also has a 3 phase outlet in the garage for running heavy machinery like mig welders etc. The need to run 3 phase equipment in the garage such as the welder would be the primary reason you have 3 phase power connected to your home. Going in to a bit more depth: I forget how the formula goes to work it out, but you are only allowed to lose 5% of the supply voltage (ie 12 volts out of 240) due to voltage drop, which is a result of the size of the cable and the length of the cable run, before having to beef up the cable size to compensate. So, a normal house in a normal street might have a cable with a 16mm2 active wire, but if the house has a 100 metre setback the cable size might have to be the next size up, which is 25mm2. The same voltage drop laws apply to 3 phase cables though, so if a 6mm2 3 phase cable is connected to a normal house, then it might still need to be upgraded to the next size, which is 10mm2, if the house is set back 100m and more than 5% of the 415v is lost. So, voltage drop is compensated for by larger cables. Geoff - Decophile. 1 62015 Hello All 🙂 We are planning to start our journey of construction our first home. We zeroed down on Metricon and henley homes based on design suitable for our lot and… 0 8157 Would also like an opinion from anyone that has used xcem over hebel for floors. Thanks 1 13277 |
