Yes, that's exactly what it is, the Fernhaven Rosedale. We first saw the display in Officer (not the one currently in the Eden Rise estate on Clyde Rd which has the master bedroom downstairs). We modded the place quite a bit. We made the ensuite bigger, made rather large changes to the whole design of the kitchen, changed the entrance to the theatre and increased the depth of the alcove in there as well as replacing the triple sliding glass door/window arrangement at the back of the theatre with 2 standard windows. I also had them build that A/V cabinet into the right side of the alcove and had them swap the broom cupboard in the laundry (the room behind the front wall of the theatre) over so it was behind the A/V cabinet so they could put a rear door in to that cabinet . We added a wardrobe to the study downstairs, increased the size of the garage and added a single roller door to the back of it. Plus we did a couple of their regular options like adding the forth bedroom upstairs and increasing the size of the pantry. We supplied the lead light inserts for the kitchen cupboards and the panels either side of the front door (knew someone in that particular trade and got them at cost). Gary also let Matt and I go in and run all of the Home Theatre and associated cabling, as well as all of the TV antenna stuff. We also supplied the spa for the ensuite, but that has a tale all of it's own..... Gary was exceptionally accomodating. I recommend Fernhaven Homes highly. Their contract says they'll build the house in nine months - Gary said it normally took about eight. He did it in six and a half!! Vic calls for end to 'McMansions' By Sarah Farnsworth The Victorian Government is calling for a reduction in power-hungry homes, to provide sustainable urban growth into the future. Planning Minister Justin Madden has told a planning summit that Melbourne is growing by 1,000 people a week, with more moving to the city over the past few years. "Three of Australia's fastest growing areas in 2006 were the suburbs of Melton, Wyndham and Casey," he said. Mr Madden puts the boom down to Melbourne's liveability but says the city's household growth is double that of the population. "[There are] more dwellings and less people in those dwellings - children growing up and forming households, entering the empty-nest stage of our lives, or choosing to live by ourselves or as couples," he said. He says "McMansions" with four bedrooms, studies and entertainment areas are taking up valuable space and resources. "At a time when we need to minimise our consumption of energy and water, many of us are living in houses that consume more power or water than we need," he told the summit. In a competition to be launched tomorrow, the Government hopes to encourage architects to design homes that are better and more realistic to the city's needs. "In the future we would like to think there will be a range of options than just big houses," Mr Madden said. Re: How big is your place? 54Oct 19, 2007 8:15 am Old place was around 130m sq, not inluding the single garage (part of the house, so + 18m) or outdoor areas, and it was comfortable for 2 of us + four legged 'child'
The backyard contained a double garage (36m), enclosed carport (40m), spa gazebo (20m) and an outdoor entertaining area of 21m. Take out the paths & garden beds, and we were left with around 30m sq of grass to mow in the backyard! Block was 555m sq, so mowing was easy, and we cleaned it ourselves (we shared the vacuum & mop task once a week, and my wife did the rest while I did the outside). New (to us!) place is around 220 just for the house, with at least another 100 under it, forming my garage, storage & work area (house is on a big hill). Still just the 2 of us + dog, but we now have much larger rooms, additional bed & bathrooms, plus family etc, so interstate friends are more comfortable staying over. We've now got a friend, who does private contract cleaning, doing all the floors (tile & timber) & bathrooms weekly. Block is over 900m sq, so there's lots of mowing, but I'm yet to be convinced we should pay someone! Re: How big is your place? 55Oct 19, 2007 8:49 am Justin Madden is just vocalising some of his personal views on the matter. What he has said here won't actually have any effect on anything.
What he and many others in power need to realise is that the urban sprawl is going to continue to grow and spread further out as more people want their own block of land and house on it, with all of the rooms he mentioned, and with employment quite high and the standard of living continuing it's very gradual upward trend I'd say there aren't any signs of it slowing any time soon. I was reading the other day (it took some effort, but I did, honest) where there are currently over 60,000 residents in the areas between (and including) Berwick and Pakenham, and this number is expected to double in the next 10 years. What we, who do live further out from the CBD, really need is better planning and management, and growth, of all of the infrastructure that supports us (abolishing Zone 3 was an OK start - the idea is starting to get some recognition), otherwise many of us will be finding less and less reasons to actually come into the city (if I didn't have to come into the CBD for work I'd probably only make the trip about once every six months). Re: How big is your place? 56Oct 19, 2007 4:58 pm What was interesting with these comments was that back in May when he said this he had just received approval for a 5 bedroom extension to his (TOORAK??) McMansion.
