Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 29, 2010 5:43 pm Very excited , we have purchased a block and are now trying to firm up a budget. We want to account for all the immovable preparation costs before we get to the building costs. It's a battleaxe block with a 68m 'handle' which will ultimately be our very long driveway. As far as we are aware, we will need to get the electricityand gas put up the driveway. We are unsure who we contact to arrange this (we figure it's not a simple job for a sparkie and will require coordination between the gas supplier and the electricity supplier). Who should we contact about this and does anyone know how much this might cost?? (Rough estimate). We have no idea where to start with this. Oh, and we're in the NSW Newcastle/Hunter area. Thanks so much. Pet Re: Estimating costs for services to be supplied up driveway 2May 29, 2010 5:51 pm I note you not in vic. In vic you would pay at least 20 to 30 per meter for an electriction to lay cable from the pit to the house. So you are looking at around $1500 ( i am not to sure if price goes up per meter on distance due to a requirement for thicker cable to ofset power loss.) You would need to organise a trench. The big question is do you have access to a pit. If you dont there is where in Vic you can be charged the big $$$$. For gas in vic we are very lucky and the gas company pays and the user only pays a fixed price of $99(about). Re: Estimating costs for services to be supplied up driveway 3May 29, 2010 6:02 pm Thanks Borg. Yes, we will need to have a trench dug from the street to the main block. This might sound dumb, but what's a pit? Do you mean from where the street access point is? Re: Estimating costs for services to be supplied up driveway 5May 29, 2010 8:02 pm In our area, it's an older suburb and we have overhead powerlines through the streets. There used to be a property (a community hall) on the land a while ago and apparently they had the electricity brought in to the building via overhead powerlines (so the neighbours have told us). We are assuming that the council will now require us to get our power fed up to the main block through underground pipes up the driveway.
