Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 21May 31, 2010 10:34 pm Thanks for the comments, folks. kiwi - yes, it was almost double the original quote, actually. But I suppose the original quote didn't factor in the coating we would have had to buy, and I think that would have been approx $500-ish (not really sure, didn't follow that research through fully as it wasn't what I wanted). I *really* didn't want to have to empty the apartment and re-apply the coating every 3-5 years. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 22May 31, 2010 10:47 pm I'm glad to see you're in FNQ with those floors. I'm in Melbourne with concrete flooring and it's soooo cold (no heating at all until today though which I am sure contributed lol). Also, be careful of your knees and ankles, they'll probably ache after awhile... Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 23May 31, 2010 11:02 pm Hi Mimi - Yes, there are definitely different requirements for here and Melbourne! I love the cold but would probably still want a rug on the traffic areas, if I were living in Melbourne. I am hoping the removal of carpets will help cool the bedrooms, at least. They are not roomy and can heat up a bit during the day; even midnight here is still fairly warm - I think tonight we might actually drop below 20 degrees for the first time this year! Concrete is certainly hard on the feet - as are tiles, I guess - and I assume the future tenants will want to add their own rugs etc, for both comfort and ambiance. I certainly would want to. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 24May 31, 2010 11:25 pm I can't imagine having carpets up in FNQ. Granted I've only been there once, but I think definitely concrete or tiling all the way through is the way to go. Our concrete looks fantastic, just a little chilly. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 27Jun 08, 2010 5:11 pm Well, after looking at the completed floors for a week and having sample pieces of every imaginable piece of laminate scattered all over the floor , we finally decided on kitchen colours. We chose Formica 'Rock Salt' in Velour finish for the underbench and full height cupboard fronts, and after MUCH tortured deliberation chose Wilsonart 'Smoky Topaz' in Textured Satin finish for the benchtops. The Wilsonart site describes Smoky Topaz as "a charcoal grey with accents of chocolate brown". To my eyes, the digital colour swatch below looks slightly cooler-toned than the actual sample I've seen in person, but then so does the digital Rock Salt sample, so it's probably just that my monitor's colour balance is out. The kitchen is in a very shaded, not particularly bright area at the rear of the apartment and we made our decision only after placing the samples in situ, to see how the natural light affected them. Obviously, the circular flouros we are about to install will change the light, but since they aren't in yet, we just had to make a call. Fingers crossed we made the right one! Here are the sample swatches: Wilsonart 'Smoky Topaz': Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Formica 'Rock Salt': Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Yeah, both of those samples above look WAY pinker on my screen than the ones here on my desk. Anyway, here is a pic of *basically* what we plan to install, although we have made some minor changes to this since this pic (and I am still waiting for updated drawings). Obviously, you'll have to use your imagination, and substitute colours. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ What isn't shown on the LHS of this drawing is a full-height pantry on the wall, which will be on your right as you enter through the door. It will only be 400mm deep so won't obstruct the view, but will be 1600mm wide so should fit plenty. That wall used to be blank. The tall skinny cupboard on the LHS of the fridge will cover the un-moveable service pipe. This means that the kitchen is going to intrude into what used to be the lounge room, by the width of the fridge cavity plus a little. While this isn't ideal by any stretch, I couldn't see any other way to do it. (And while I have already signed off on this design regardless, if you have a better idea, please share it! I promise I won't be offended, although I may not be able to resist still defending my decision. ) Initially we tried putting the fridge on the LHS of that pipe, but that really crowded it up against the cooktop, which we couldn't move further left because of the window. It just looked cramped. Putting the fringe in front of the pipe meant the fridge would stick out WAY past the benchtop (and therefore way into the room). So we hope this version works, anyway. There should be enough space in the centre of the room to put a kitchen/dining table (although perhaps only a 4-seater), if the tenant wishes. That's the idea, at least. I doubt the kitchen will go in before early July, so there will be a bit of a wait until we can see if our choices look OK. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 28Jun 09, 2010 11:23 am Can I be a pain and get you to take a shot of your bathroom tiles up close, I like the colours. Looking good so far. I liked the pic of the original underside of your sink, it looked a bit like ours, luckily we did not have the cockie eggs, shudder. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 30Jun 17, 2010 12:28 pm Just dropping back to say my computer has been in the shop for a bit and I haven't had access to any pics..... it's back now so I will try to get a close up of the tiles posted tonight. Sorry for the delay, Nathan. We haven't had anything really pic-worthy happen in the last week or so... just had people in to measure for cupboards and windows. Oh, but the aircons went in last week, yay! I am still waiting for final drawings for the kitchen - hopefully they will be ready soon. The sub-board in the unit has to be changed and the electrician is half-way through doing that so there is no power there at the moment. We installed the framing to cover the aircon pipes, and that will be finished when a plasterer comes it at the end to do a few jobs, such as the cornices etc in the kitchen. I've also ordered replacement flyscreen for the windows that don't have security screens already - they were looking a bit tatty at best, completely ripped at worst. We were going to just rescreen them ourselves but then we found a reasonable price for a full replacement (ie new frames as well) so we've gone that way. Oh, and the finishing touches were put on the bathroom - doorstop on the shower dooor, door put on laundry cupboard, and mirror properly sealed. Just have to get some grout sealer, now. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 31Jun 17, 2010 2:35 pm Flying through! No worries about the pics, I can wait. Just don't forget me! lol Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 33Jun 20, 2010 3:23 pm It's got like a natural grain look? I like them! Good colour grouting too! Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 34Jun 20, 2010 3:47 pm Yes, it's basically a fake marble look. It's obviously not marble, but as a "look" I think it's not too bad. I am really happy with the grout colour, too. I actually don't even know what it is; I just told the tiler to match the grout to the tile as best possible, and that I didn't want too light a grout. Re: Rae's apartment reno pics 35Jun 30, 2010 9:43 am Bathroom and floors look fabulous Rae. Can't wait to see the kitchen. Where in NQ is the unit? Are you as far north as me? I seem to remember you are up on the Tablelands somewhere, right? I'm sure I'd recognise that red dirt anywhere... hehehe Yep, building in Tolga.
