Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 22, 2010 12:03 am I painted acrylic paint on an internal enamel door. I did sand it first but as the door is textured the sanding only really affects the top of textured bumps. I can peel the paint off with my fingernails, although doing the stripping entire door would not be fun at all. Should I just put a second coat of acrylic on and pretend it never happened, or is there an easy way to get the acrylic off so I can put a proper primer on first... Re: Ok I made a mistake 2May 22, 2010 12:15 am Hi, Try giving it a good scrub with metho and a stiff brush. Put a fan on yourself and open the window or you will soon feel very happy. It might help to take the door down and scrub it flat. Cheers Re: Ok I made a mistake 4May 22, 2010 8:13 pm It sounds like the sandpaper was too fine, you need to sand it back with a heavier grit of paper and cut back to take the sheen off the paint. Then use a good quality primer before your top coat. i prefer to use enamel on doors anyway, is there any reason you dont want to use enamel on them? Re: Ok I made a mistake 5May 22, 2010 10:15 pm New door sounds like a goer I don't like the smell of enamel, don't like cleaning it up, and it yellows. I like how it is harder/tougher than acrylic though. I just find it easier to do everything in acrylic though. Re: Ok I made a mistake 6May 22, 2010 11:56 pm Just maybe you were too quick to try scraping it off. I remember painting a zincalume tubular fence with acrylic paint maybe 20 years ago. After it had dried I complained to the paint manufacturer that it scraped off with slight fingernail pressure. I was told "stop trying to scrape it off with you fingernails until it has fully cured." After a few weeks, the paint was bonded for life - still looks good today and is almost impossible to scrape off with anything. The motto, as far as I'm concerned, is "don't test the adhesion of acrylic paint until it has had long enough to cure fully" But, I must admit, I have no idea how long "long enough" is. Cheers zeke I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says. Thanks 2 6201 Unless there were unforeseeable issues with the site, I dont think you should have to pay for contractors errors or poor planning. I'd probably try and be reasonable and… 5 1857 |
