Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 20, 2010 10:39 am We are moving and I thought I would ask if anyone could reccomend an insurer in Melbourne. We are currently with GIO never had to make a claim. Just thought it might make the shopping around easier. Oh and a car insurer too if anyone can reccomend one. THanks Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 2May 20, 2010 5:57 pm We bank with the CBA and we have our current house and contents with them (through Comminsure) - they have been great - I had to make a claim after the first 3 weeks of living here as I flooded the house with the washing machine and ruined all of the carpet - there were no issues at all with the claim - and it's really great when we go overseas we call them and they put a note on our credit cards and our insurance - sort of like a one stop shop for us - it's direct debited every month and they don't charge extra for paying monthly like every other insurance company that we looked at. Last time I checked their insurer was Allianz - this may have changed though - so maybe have a look at Allianz also (My folks are with them and they are great also). Might be one to consider! Slow, rude, had no idea where the claim was at, got htings wrong..... It was added stress we didn't need after a fire caused by some idiot dropping a cigarette butt behind our back fence on a total fire ban day. The next time our renewal came up, we walked - and found out in the process that they were also very expensive. It will depend on a lot of things - some insurers may be cheaper for larger or smaller policy amounts, or for different locations, and certainly for different policy options, so make sure you compare apples with apples. We switched to RACV and we're still happy with the policy; haven't needed to claim though, so I'm reserving judgement. When you get quotes, ask for premiums for different excess amounts too - a $200 excess instead of $100, for example, can seriously reduce your annual premium. Abnd pleeeease check what the policy covers. Do you need valuables insured? Fusion of electrical motors? (Air con, pumps etc for house, and fridge and so on for contents) What suits one person might be completely wrong for you. Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 4May 20, 2010 6:24 pm Great advice kek, cheers I haven't explored all our insurance options just yet, but earlier this year I did get a quote through CBA and RACV for both my car and the house +contents. Found that CBA was much, much more expensive for both in our case. I do like the idea of having the loan and insurance all through the one provider, but I've given up on that completely after seeing how expensive CBA was Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 6May 20, 2010 10:14 pm I was also with CBA and when I checked last year found that Budget Direct were substantially cheaper on both the home and contents and my car. I haven't had a claim in 25 years so didn't want too many frills (all policies were compared apples for apples). As KEK says though, you need to check individual companies for your particular circumstances as they all vary. Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 7May 21, 2010 2:52 pm We are with racv for our car insurance and they have been great. In the past 12 months I have had to make 2 claims (1 was hail storm damage) and their service was excellent. Very quick and did not have to jump through any hoops We are also currently looking for Home and contents, we did online quotes through lots of companies and we found Allianz was the cheapest for the cover we are after. We were able to get fusion cover, accidental breakage/ damage cover, portable items cover, the lot and was still cheaper then other large insurance companies. But I will be getting some quotes done over the phone as well so I can also ask more questions and it will be more accurate. Is anyone with Allianz? If so what is your feedback on them? Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 8Jun 01, 2010 11:16 am I have had good dealings with Budget had to make claims on the car and they were fast and professional having said that I did an online quote with Bingle and they are $250pa cheaper so I am thinking of switching. Did a home and contents quote with budget and they are about $300pa more than GIO. Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 9Jun 01, 2010 11:19 am We are with the RACV, they offer 10% each policy, as we also have comprehensive car insurance. I've found them great to deal with. Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 10Jun 17, 2010 3:37 pm I wouldn't reccomend AAMI for house and contents. We made a claim back in March for storm damage, and their service so far has been apalling. We are still waiting more than 3 months later for repairs to start. Basically everything they say they will do in their documentation never happened. We'll be switching to Youi - they have been great for the car. Re: Cheapest Home and Contents Vic 11Jun 18, 2010 7:50 pm I've got my car insurance with RACV and we have our home and contents with them, they have the best price out of all my quotes, always have for each house My partner has just switched to Youi for his car and is saving about 50% Huge savings, we were very pleased It definitely counts to shop around, get as many quotes as you can and take it from there. Bek I'm back I have posted this before: We hired Darbecca to do every stage inspection, and I strongly recommend them to anyone that asks me. They were amazing.
