Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 09, 2010 10:13 pm Hi all I'm a general lurker here but appreciate all the advice that gets given out. Hoping someone can assist in my issue: Essentially, we own a top floor 60's apartment which we love. However, we have just discovered we are expecting a baby...which is great news but due to financial constraints we will need to stay in this apartment until approx 10 months or so after the birth, at which time we'll be able to buy a house. We really don't want to drive the people below us mad with a crying baby all hours of the night and were wondering if anyone had any cheapish tips to soundproof the nursery? Thanks for all your help! Cheers B Re: Soundproofing a nursery in an apartment block.. 3May 11, 2010 12:38 pm Yep, I too would suggest carpeting the floors (or at least a good sized rug) - and curtains, wall hangings (even canvas art), rugs, cushions. Anything soft will help soften the room and absorb sound. If it is bare and with lots of hard surfaces, the sound tends to reverberate. If the nursery forms part of a common wall, you could try hanging a baby quilt on that wall - or any wall in the nursery and make it look like a display piece. Lots of soft toys on a shelf. A soft padded chair? Just throwing around ideas. Re: Soundproofing a nursery in an apartment block.. 5May 21, 2010 3:41 am While carpets and drapes will help reduce the echo and sound within the room, it will not help with soundproofing. If the sound wave has sufficient energy to enter the wall, floor or ceiling, it would have already blasted through the carpet. You'll need to beef up the mass. Make the surfaces in question heavier. Additional plasterboard or subflooring is most common. Ted White Re: Soundproofing a nursery in an apartment block.. 6May 31, 2010 8:09 pm I saw an HGTV show called Holmes on Homes soundproof a wall.
