Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 07, 2010 1:11 pm The custom design floor plan thread has got me thinking ..... Who has a laundry that you enter via the kitchen? And is it a pain or is it OK? Building on an acre in Macedon ......one day. Re: laundry via kitchen? 2May 07, 2010 1:16 pm We haven't moved in yet, but our laundry will be accessed via the kitchen. Our floor plan is on page one of our thread. I dont think it'll bother me, I love the position of the laundry

There's also a door to outside from the laundry. I've found it really handy since we've been here and wish we'd incorporated the idea into our build. Re: laundry via kitchen? 5May 07, 2010 2:24 pm we are having one too - I don't see it a problem. If you check my plan I have a sliding door going out and the entry from the garage is in the laundry. The difference was that where they have bedrooms we had the hallway from the front living-so whenever anyone wanted to access the laundry they walked straight through the kitchen-annoying! The plan on the custom design thread is a bit different and I think would be very inconvenient. Also, it does depned on your family setup-who is accessing the space at any given time. It makes a kind of sense to keep the 'utility' areas in one spot. For me, it wasn't such a good idea as I have indoor cats, and I wouldn't be able to close the laundry off from the kitchen because their (sometimes smelly ) litter box is kept in the laundry! Re: laundry via kitchen? 8May 07, 2010 3:58 pm Vundaful! Re: laundry via kitchen? 10May 07, 2010 4:28 pm Aaron & Erin Cripes I haven't really thought that one through... will have to make an effort to clean the litter more frequently!!! eeeeek! Oh nooooo I just had a thought though - if it becomes a problem get a cat door installed on the interior door Re: laundry via kitchen? 11May 07, 2010 4:39 pm Ha thanks for the all the interest ! This was the one section of our reno that I spent the most time on For many reasons I'm having the laundry off the kitchen thats where it is currently so less plumbing costs! Since we will be only 5/10 mins from the beach we are going to use as a mud room ( with outdoor shower) Its going to have its own special shelf for all my husbands junk so he doesn't think about putting on our island bench Ill also create extra kitchen storage in there if needed Cheers Candi ************* First time renovator VIC Re: laundry via kitchen? 12May 07, 2010 8:04 pm Yeah, thanks everyone. I too was planning on having my laundry next to the kitchen .... but it's a fair distance from all the bedrooms so I was just wondering whether trekking from both ends of the house then through the kitchen with dirty laundry ....well, maybe it's a bit yuck? But I can't really figure out where I'd prefer to have it! I'll post my plans one day soon so everyone can have a good look. Building on an acre in Macedon ......one day. Re: laundry via kitchen? 13May 07, 2010 8:30 pm Our laundry is directly off the garage with access to the backyard-therefore when we get home from the beach wet gear is straight into the laundry and doesn't need trekking through the house. The same goes for the outdoor access from the backyard. Another thing to consider with back yard access is that it is often handy to have the toilet with easy access from outside - some of these plans seem to require a fair trek thru the house, over carpet etc to get to a toilet. Our own laundry is actually nowhere near the kitchen - its in the back wing with the minor bedrooms and main bathroom/toilet - has the advantages IMO that dirty clothes from bathroom or bedrooms have close access to laundry without going thru any other liveing areas (our main bedroom is at front of house, we have a separate laundry hamper in there). Also easy access from outside to toilet, just thru the laundry to the bathroom next along the hallway. Some people have commented previously that they want the laundry away from the childrens bedrooms so they dont wake the kids up doing the washing - we have one son in the back bedroom but there is around 7m from his bedhead to the washing machine and a BIR and Laundry cupboard in between, has not been a problem. Re: laundry via kitchen? 16May 08, 2010 8:48 am mummagoose Yeah, thanks everyone. I love kitchens off laundries (but then, I don't have a cat... ) - it's great to have the work areas together. When you're cooking or doing other kitchen stuff, it's handy to have the washing and drying going on right next door. As Deemaree pointed out though, the kitchen layout is important. In our old place, the only access to the laundry was right through the middle of the kitchen - which drove us mad when people were coming and going while we were trying to cook! The place we rented had a similar issue with the kitchen - the open ends of the galley-style kitchen lined up precisely with the front door and the doorway to the kids' bedrooms and bathroom. So traffic through the kitchen was a nightmare. Ours is behind the garage, with a mudroom attached, and it's a fantastic setup. Dirty overalls and boots can be removed and left there, the sink is handy for washing up filthy hands (although we added a sink to the garage) and carting buckets of grey water outside is convenient too. It's not close to the bathrooms or bedrooms, but we just have clothes hampers in each bedroom, so transporting washing isn't a daily occurence anyway. Also, the noise of washing machine and dryer are well away from living rooms. Either location would work well if the house design is right. Toilet in the laundry maybe? Mind you, my kids are very good at using the lemon tree ........ Isn't that what lemon trees are for? We have French doors from our ensuite to the outdoor entertaining area. Great for when we have guests over for a BBQ, also great when I'm working outdoors....no need to wrestle with my boots and then trek through the house. An extra toilet off the garage or laundry is handy and quite a few people have added one, especially if they have a pool. Fairy Blue has a great design....I think MissVintage has a "pool loo" too.
