Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 29, 2010 6:45 pm Hi everyone, So we have FINALLY decided to start work on our outdoor area But before we do anything there is one issue I would like your input on. Our water tank is located on the Alfresco side (it could not be located to the dead side due to limited space) and we are considering relocating it to the back of the house. If we move it to the back then we will be building over the easement for which we will have to obtain council approval. The cost for this will be $144 ($69 for application and then $75 on approval). I have spoken to the council and have been told that as water tanks are considered minor structures, approval should'nt be a problem. The cost for moving the tank (including concrete slab & power point) would be around $1350, so in total we are looking at $1500 approx. I was hoping to get your views on whether you think it would be worth spending the $1500 and freeing up that space (around 1.5m x 1.6m). Or should be just build a timber screen around it and leave it there. The cost for a screen would be around $500 (from an old quote I have). What do you think we should do? Re: Should we move our Water Tank? 2Apr 29, 2010 6:58 pm It really depends on your landscaping plans - have you decided what's to go in your yard? Building a screen around your tank in its existing location would give you two separate areas on that side of the house, which could be a good thing, especially if you want to hide a utility area.... However, if your plans require a nice big space, then moving the tank would be better. If you know what you want to include in the yard, but aren't sure where to put them, maybe the folks here can help with ideas. Think about what you need: Clothesline? Shed? Veggie garden? Pets, kids, any hobbies that need to be accommodated? BBQ area, etc.... Re: Should we move our Water Tank? 3Apr 29, 2010 10:15 pm Thanks for your input kek! We do have a general idea of what we want to do and would like to have a deck in the alfresco area and have the rest of the area paved. As neither one of us is interested in gardening so we want something as low maintenance as possible. Here is the landscape plan I made a while ago (and thats a water feature located opposite the alfresco) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thinking over the things you mentioned kek... Clothesline - would go on the bedroom 3 wall next to the laundry. Shed - don't need one and doubt will ever in the future. Veggie garden - as mentioned above not much of a gardener Pets - nopes Kids - not now but sometime in the future... I initially thought about what you mentioned i.e. having two seperate areas. The space behind the tank could be used for the kids cubby house or something of the sort.. but then on thinking over it... it might not be a safe thing to have them a bit out of sight.. BBQ area - we use coal bbqs so thats movable... The reason I thought moving the water tank would be a good idea was since generally we have large barbies so having more space for ppl to move around would be handy... its mostly the cost factor which makes me think if its worth the extra space or not... Can it be considered as an investment on the house as well? Say if we want to sell the place sometime down the road, then would it be considered better to have the tank out of the way or would it make no difference? Umm... would you buy a house with a tank located where it is currently? Built PD Beaumont 35 - One year down in the new house.. still so much to do.. Re: Should we move our Water Tank? 4Apr 30, 2010 6:52 am Well, it would put me off, but I like to have a bit of space for a garden - and like you, a decent sized entertaining area. We paid to upgrade our tank to a slimline so it could go on the blind side of the house because, like you, we have an easement along the back where it would normally go. Another thought - if you relocate the tank to the back, will you have room to get past it? It would be a PITA if there's no access around it. Re: Should we move our Water Tank? 5Apr 30, 2010 3:23 pm Well there would be around 0.8m of space to go around it, I am hoping that should be enough as we are not planning on using that space for anything else. In our situation the tank could not be relocated to the blind side as there was not enough wall space between all the bedroom and ensuite windows. Even if there had been any space, it would have been a tight fit and barely any room to squeeze by it. We could not even get a slimline version for the current location as it would have been too wide for the space between the two windows. *sigh* I think maybe we will just relocate it and bear the cost - as in the long run I don't want to always keep wondering about how the outdoor area would have turned out had we chosen to move it.
