Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 29, 2010 3:03 pm Hi there, can someone please give me some further insight into building with different cladding types. We have had plans of our new home drawn up, and it has been suggested by the designer to use SCYON matrix and axon cladding (James Hardie). Who has used these products before, and what do you think? My concern is the quality/durability. Although they seem quite hardy (good R value etc), there seems to be little substance to the material. Would block-work or another product be a better option for thermas mass, durability etc.. Thanks Re: Cladding 2Apr 29, 2010 8:00 pm Our home is cladded with hardies stria, we are wrapped with the end result, building in SE Qld we did not want thermal mass esp in summer and the western sun, but we have insulated the walls. We had a excuvator back into the house last week and it did chip one of the boards but that was easily replaced. The main reason we choose hardies cladding is that we are building on a slopping block and we needed to use light wieght materials. Most of the homes around us have used a combination of products with great effect. My Gran has lived in a cladded house since the 70's we give it a lick of paint every ten years and it still looks great so the product does stand the test of time. They will of course need painting maintenance like any cladding product. Longevity is not a problem. They have no significant thermal mass though like bricks would but this is not necessarily an issue. Most standard brick veneer homes have thermal mass on the outside which is not where it should be anyway (it should be on the inside of the house for proper effect) so you will not be giving up anything. With wall insulation as required by BCA it will be fine. Re: Cladding 4Apr 30, 2010 8:08 am Thanks, that's been very helpful. What is your opinion on other wall cladding types such as corrugated iron/colorbond, and rendered surfaces such as cement sheeting, besser brick or even Hebel power panel? I suppose it becomes confusing, especially when u have a number of materials that can be rendered. I'm after value for money and quality. Really we're looking to mix up a few different materials to keep the design tastefully interesting! Standard uninsulated double brick has an R value of around 0.7. An insulated standard 90mm stud timber frame can have an R value of around 2.7.
