Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 29, 2010 2:46 pm we are designing our house at the moment and will have a living room off the kitchen and dining and a separate rumpus theatre room. What is considered a good size family room for a couple of couches and tv and what is considered too small? I know some people may say bigger is better but i don't want to waste money on lots of unused space but i want it to be a practical size too. Can anyone tell me what they consider a good size? Thanks Re: Good size living room?? 2Apr 29, 2010 3:33 pm It depends on the overall size of the home & family, and a matter of choice really. But I'd say anything under 15 sq/m is getting too squeezy. A good size is say from 20 to 30 sq/m. Bigger than that is unneccessary unless its a games room. In that case if there's a pool table, you need plenty of space, and 30sq/m would be on the small side. I dont really know if this is a good "space" as such as we havent built it, but all thats going there is a TV for me and a L-shaped couch - its mainly so I can watch Tv whilst cooking etc We have a seperate home theatre off this which is almost 28m2, and will be our main space for movie watching etc And if your interested, the whole space left for our kitchen/dining/family is around 63m2 (not including HT) in an L-shape (Approximate anyways, Im no genius at maths ) Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: Good size living room?? 4Apr 29, 2010 7:06 pm Assuming it's open on one or two sides, you'd get away with a bit less space than in a separate room with four walls. Ours is about 19 m2....plenty big enough for a largeish L-shaped lounge and a long TV unit opposite, with a coffee table and side table. It's open at one end, so enclosed by three walls. We only use it as a TV room (the kids push the coffee table back if they want to play any particularly active Wii games ). If it's to be a play room for kids as well, you might want a bit more room, but given that you have a separate rumpus room, I'd say Ash is spot-on about minimum size. A word of advice: think about furniture placement when you're deciding where to locate windows and doors - I often see family rooms with nowhere to put the TV but in front of a window. sorry mate, not wasting more time on this.
