Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 23, 2007 10:33 am Hey Guys,
I'd like to get some opinions (maybe even professional opinions if there's any tradies out there) on dark coloured roof tiles. The display of the home we're building has dark coloured roof tiles (coal coloured) but we're wondering about fading and quality of tiles. We have the option free of charge, to change to Bristile orangey-range of roof tiles, which are obviously better quality terracotta tiles, but I'd like to know what you guys think about the dark coloured clay tiles. The main concern is fading and loss of glossiness/shine. Some people we've spoken to have said this won't happen for decades, but we'd like your opinions and expertise! Re: Roof Tile Colours 2Sep 24, 2007 10:40 pm I would recommend that if you are really worried, pay the extra and get glazed terracotta tiles. Unfortunately, the cement tiles are not guaranteed against fading for a long period of time. And they are noticable when they chip. It depends on the style of house and what suits i suppose.

Do you have any idea? Re: Roof Tile Colours 4Sep 24, 2007 11:41 pm If your planning on rainwater collection - terracotta soaks lots up before it runs off.
As for fading - yeah - but all roofs will change colour - I have a stack of white tile roofs below my house - guess what - they are all sort of muddy brown dirty looking things now Steve Re: Roof Tile Colours 6Sep 25, 2007 3:05 pm Hi MattnMegan,
Our house is about 20 years old and has black glazed terracotta tiles. They still look brand new. The brand of tiles is Wunderlich. The company that did our pre-purchase inspection was impressed with the condition of the roof and said it's one of the best tile types you could get. Hope this helps Eimaj Re: Roof Tile Colours 7Sep 25, 2007 5:01 pm eimaj Hi MattnMegan, Our house is about 20 years old and has black glazed terracotta tiles. They still look brand new. They're not one of the options included in our home, so we'd have to pay more, and I guess it would probably be substantially more. try http://www.archicentre.com.au/costguide.pdf its an older one - but has the roof tile prices in it. Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Hmm.. it's from 2003. I dunno whether prices would have risen heaps since then for tiles... although I imagine the difference between the two would be the same still. Why not get the cheaper cement now and paint spray it after 20 years time? At least you will get a brand new look at that time! - devank Yeah, I get what you're saying, but our concern is that it will fade and look cheap and un-shiny a LOT sooner than 20 years.
