Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Tips on cleaning windows 2Apr 25, 2010 3:40 pm Depends what it is, but most sticky substances can be removed with citrus oil or eucalyptus oil or the like. Silicones and similar sealers just need a nice sharp blade to get them off. Re: Tips on cleaning windows 3Apr 25, 2010 11:53 pm You will almost certainly scratch your windows with a blade. Especially toughened (safety) glass. That's because toughened glass is covered in "fines" which the blade picks up and damages the glass. Tell your builder to fix it, it's his problem. Failing that, try high pressure wash. And by the way, never wash windows with washing up liquid... they will corrode. Use car wash detergent. Ed Ed, I find that surprising! Clearly this is your field of expertise, so I'm not saying I know better. Generally, washing up liquid is a near neutral detergent. How is it that "corrosion" would result from its use? I was of the impression that professional window cleaners often use it too! Ash. Hi Ash If you would not wash you car in it, don't wash your windows. Powder coat is like wet coat paint but without the solvent. There is a lot of information about corrosion in aluminium windows and I personally think it's to do with using washing up liquid as a cleaner. Google CAR WASH and WASHING UP LIQUID... Quote: To wash a car in dish washing liquid will strip the wax from your car, pull the oils out of the paint and clear coat and over time make the finish brittle, crack and hair line crack. To wash a car in the sun with any soap with cause water spots on the finish. A water spot is actually a miniature crater being formed on your finishes surface. After time these mini craters dig deeper and deeper in time getting under the finish and allowing it to lift. This lifting can cause the finish to again be weak and brittle as the bond is no longer there. The best soap for a car is actual car wash soap. It is a softer soap and will not remove the wax or harm the finish. A fresh wash mitt or microfiber sponge is best over a kitchen sponge. To use the wrong products on your car or in a improper way can cause damage that is not reversible unless repainted. And a repaint is way worse than a factory finish.
