Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 24, 2010 11:35 pm Hi All Just wondering if anyone has got decent prices from anywhere for led saturn range light switches and power points. We are looking at replacing our whole house in them as we have the most ugly light switches, They are that large they have them in aged care and handicap homes. The switch that you turn on and off are like 3cm x 3cm, Butt ugly!!!! Thanks heaps. Caz Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 2Apr 25, 2010 9:46 am well, i don't think you can just replace the saturn range as the housing at the back is different. u need different housing that's why it only can be done with during construction that you specify you want a saturn switches then the builder can put in the housing. Not true.... The Clipsal Saturn range can replace the existing power points & light switches very easily. They are based on standard mounting centres - so it is very easy for an electrician to change over. Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 4Apr 25, 2010 9:55 am Oh dear, nobody tell my DH, he LOVES them. They are also quite expensive - around $30 each for the basic single switch light and prices go up from there. We used them only in strategic places - like in our areas on "show" - not in bedrooms or bathrooms. Some things are worth waiting for. You may be confused Kyton. You can replace them easily with either the LED version or non LED version of the Saturn switches. Perhaps you were thinking of Saturn LED switches with C-Bus control. btw, the Clipsal Saturns are up for some competition now. HPM Legrand released their new Arteor range at Sydney's Designex show this week. They make the Saturns look a bit tired. The Saturns have been given the flick from our new build and will be replaced with the Arteor GPO's & switches. Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 8Apr 25, 2010 10:36 am Rubber_noggin - our electrician told us that he had to run an extra wire for us to have the LED capability on our Saturns, so am only going on that info. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 9Apr 25, 2010 11:36 am I have to support Kyton based on our experience trying to replace a combined double power point/light switch in our bathroom last year. The new kitchen had Saturn switches put in with no problems but when the electrician tried to put the new Saturn switch in for the bathroom it was not possible. He actually removed the old switch before he found out that it was not going to work. Perhaps the problem was due to it being a combined light switch and powerpoint but I was very upset as I had been working on OH for 12 months to get the Saturn. Kyton, sorry to learn that your sparky gave you misleading information. I can confirm that the LED and non LED versions of the Saturn switches have the same wiring requirements. That is, an additional wire run is not required to have the LED saturns. Perhaps your sparky was not familiar with the LED switches. Or, it may not have been convenient for them to order the correct version. Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 11Apr 25, 2010 8:10 pm I may be able to shed some light on this...although I am going from memory... If you want the LED to be on when the light is off, and off when the light is on - your sparky will need to run an extra wire (A Neutral) to the wall switch. If you want the LED to be on when the light is on, and off when the light is off - your can do this with standard wiring. Note: I MAY (probably!) have that reversed/confused - but either way the switches can be put into a standard light point and work fine, just the LED activity will vary. Normal powerpoints and switches can be swapped over very easily. because they use the same mounting brackets. If it happens that you have non standard brackets... you can use 'Plaster brackets' which are an alternative bracket used when a stud bracket ( a typical outlet bracket 'hammered' onto the studs at rough-in stage ) is not present. So there is no reason why a saturn switch or powerpoint cannot be installed. Regarding the blue illumination. without going to deep into how electricity works, for a light to work it needs an active and a neutral. Now most houses are wired in such a way where there is a neutral present at every switch, which works out great for all the saturn lovers who want the lil blue lights. But there are some sparkies who wire houses in such a way called ' 3-plating', this is when the active/neutral/earths are run through the ceiling and all you will have at your switch are actives and switch lines... no neutrals. therefore you cannot have lil blueys in this instance. This 3-plating is mainly seen in older homes where all the switches are placed on architraves. Because you dont have to run so many cables down to the switch it made it easier to fit these architrave switches.. there are a few other reasons why it was done like this. when changing to saturn a common occurance is not being able to get the blue illumination on a 2-way. Without going into the ins-and outs.. its becuase there is no neutral at one of the switches. ALSO keep in mind its not that hard to run a neutral to a switch... give it to your sparky hope this helped Electrical - Automation - Smart wiring - New homes - Commercial - Data cabling] 1300 050 315 www.cenemelectrical.com.au www.facebook.com/cenemelectrical Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 16Apr 28, 2010 10:21 am ooooh!!!! So exciting we LOOOOOVVVEEEE these switches... I will have to ask for them for my Birthday hahahaha Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 17Apr 28, 2010 4:13 pm What about Clipsal Impress as a less expensive alternative to the Saturn range but still with the LED style.... I've been looking at those with some interest. http://www.clipsal.com.au/trade/product ... ush_button Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 18Apr 28, 2010 4:45 pm Is this the new Legrand range?? http://www.legrand.com.au/inter/liblocal/Arteor%20Comsumer%20Brochure.pdf My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 19Apr 28, 2010 5:55 pm After reading the above information it seems that there are some electricians who are either out of their depth with new technology or either they just cannot be bothered. At least I can now revisit the option of getting Saturn switches in our en-suite renovation which will be starting soon. Thank you to those who explained the way these switches work. The annoying thing is that I was willing to forget about the led light in our bathroom as long as the switch itself looked more attractive than the original one. However I did not even get told that this was possible. Re: Clipsal Saturn Range Light Switches 20Apr 29, 2010 4:30 pm Im glad the information helped, With electrical almost anything can be done... it just depends on the installer The clipsal impress are a great alternative asawell.. I actually prefer the 'switching feeling' of these units compared to saturn. With saturn you have to really push the point of your finger into the switch to turn on a light whereas the impress switches you just need to lightly tap the switch to use it.
