Just a quick general question - does anyone know what the maximum length a structural beam can be?
We are planning our backyard and will get a builder to build a freestanding pergola using the same bricks and roof tiles as the home.
It will have walls on two sides whilst the other two sides will remain opening with brick columns on each corner.
So how long a beam can I have - ie if it is a rectangle shape how long can I have an opening? I know that I have a huge metal structural beam over my bifold and it it around 4.5m long - can it be longer then this or will I have to have a central support column?
Sorry for the silly convaluted question - just trying to work out roughly how big I can make my pergola.
Thanks
